Content available remote Variable Stars from the OGLE-III Shallow Survey in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We describe variable stars found in the data collected during the OGLE-III Shallow Survey covering the I-band magnitude range from 9.7 mag to 14.5 mag. The main result is the extension of period-luminosity relations for Cepheids up to 134 days. We also detected 82 binary systems and 110 long-period variables not present in the main OGLE catalogs. Additionally 558 objects were selected as candidates for miscellaneous variables.

We present photometric maps based on data from the shallow survey in the Large Magellanic Cloud performed as the supplementary project during the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. They cover about 40 square degrees in the LMC and contain mean calibrated VI photometry and astrometry of about 1.7 million stars. The magnitudes of the registered objects range from 9.1 to 18.5. We discuss the quality of data and present color-magnitude diagrams of selected fields. The maps together with the main LMC photometric maps are available to the astronomical community from the OGLE Internet archive.

We have obtained deep near infrared J- and K-band observations of 14 BL Her and 5 W Vir SMC stars from the OGLE-III survey with the ESO New Technology Telescope equipped with the SOFI infrared camera. From these observations, period-luminosity (P-L) relations in the J and Ks 2MASS bands were derived. The slopes of the K- and J-band relations of -2.15±0.19 and -1.95±0.24, respectively, agree very well with the corresponding slopes derived previously for population II Cepheids in globular clusters, Galactic bulge and in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The distance modulus to the SMC obtained from our data using P-L relation derived for globular cluster Cepheids equals to 18.85±0.07 (statistical) ± 0.07 mag (systematic without including potential metallicity effect), which within the uncertainties agrees well with the results obtained with other methods.
