Pancreatic cancer is the second most common malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract. The only potentially curative treatment is complete surgical resection but it can be performed only in patients without metastatic disease and entire resection with negative surgically and microscopically margins (R0 resection). Complete resection of the tumour with vessels’ involvement is still controversial. However, many authors proved that venous as well as arterial resection and reconstruction did not influence on final outcome. Proper preoperative staging helps in relevant treatment (surgery, radiochemotherapy or combination of these methods). The most common diagnostic step is MDCT with CTA which improves high sensitivity and specificity. The purpose of the study was to assess vessels’ infiltration by pancreatic carcinoma on the basis of CTA and surgery. CTA showed 88,9% sensitivity in diagnosing vessel’s involvement, however in some cases surgery is the method of choice in assessing tumours as resectable or unresectable.

Bone fractures in children's traumas are enormous problem not only from psychological point of view but in these cases the diagnostic issue is much more relevant. The correct diagnosis leads to proper treatment and reduces the risk of adverse effects. For this reason, plain radiography is not the only step in diagnostic procedure and is often combined with Computed Tomography (CT) and sometimes with Magnetic Resonance (MR). The aim of the study was to assess a contribution of three dimensional volume rendering (3D VRT) images on the diagnosis and the possible qualification to the surgical treatment. The study was performed on 21 patients (12 boys, 9 girls) hospitalized at Pediatric Surgery Department in Sosnowiec from January 2007 to April 2008. All of the patients underwent plain radiography as the first diagnostic step and had CT as an additional imaging procedure. A total number of fractures were 28 vs. 32, respectively diagnosed on X-ray and CT scans. The necessity of surgical reposition was present in 8 patients. Spiral CT and its postprocessing technique 3D VRT play major role in musculoskeletal trauma. They bring particular importance in fracture detailed estimating and any multiorgan injuries. However, the need of performing CT should be limited to uncertain cases and before operation planning because of higher radiation dose.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is caused by occlusion of the pulmonary artery or its branches. CTA is a "gold standard" for the diagnosis and extent determination of PE. The etiology of embolic material may influence the extent and localization of embolism. The CTA assessment of influence of PE etiology on extent of vascular occlusion and clot localization. The study group consisted of 24 patients divided into two subgroups (15 patients with deep venous thrombosis - DVT and 9 patients with heart failure/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease - HF/COPD; respectively group A and group B) were taken into consideration. The location of clots and an average percentage of vascular stenosis in CTA were analysed in these two subgroups. The mean percentage of vessel occlusion was 20,49% vs. 14,22% respectively in group A vs. group B. Bilateral occlusion of vessels was more frequent in group A and unilateral in group B. DVT may predispose to bilateral occlusion and more severe vessels obstruction.
