The use of smoke during armed operations has been present for quite a time in the military history. Its role determined many times the final results of the battles. The article presents the use of smoke masking in military operations on sea and coastal land areas in the past and now.

Masowy udział śmigłowców w wojnach i konfliktach XX wieku zrodził zapotrzebowanie na zastosowanie nowocześniejszych i skuteczniejszych środków ich zwalczania. Legło ono u podstaw rozwoju środków minowania pola walki w postaci wprowadzenia min przeciwśmigłowcowych. Autor w swoim artykule dzieli się z czytelnikami spostrzeżeniami o rozwiązaniach wprowadzonych w tego rodzaju minach w armiach zachodnich, armii rosyjskiej, przedstawia także propozycje min produkcji polskiej.

The mass deployment of helicopters in wars and conflicts of the 20th century made it necessary to use the most advanced and effective countermeasures to fight them. This became a basis for the introduction of anti-helicopter mines. The writer shares his observations on solutions applied in other armies and presents the designs of Polish anti-helicopter mines.

Wojska inżynieryjne są nieodłącznym komponentem prawie każdego polskiego kontyngentu wojskowego poza granicami kraju. Oprócz wykonywania zadań podczas misji ONZ, ostatnio główny wysiłek został skierowany na misje stabilizacyjne. Najwięcej problemów przysparzało rozminowywanie na terenach byłej Jugosławii, w Iraku i Afganistanie. Często nowoczesny sprzęt elektroniczny nie mógł być w pełni wykorzystywany ze względu na ukształtowanie terenu (rodzaj gleby) oraz rodzaje pól minowych. Warunki ekstremalne występowały w Iraku i Afganistanie, gdyż saperzy byli narażeni na bezpośrednie oddziaływanie żołnierzy przeciwnika. W celu przeciwdziałania improwizowanym ładunkom wybuchowym jest tworzony system Counte - lmprovised Explosive Oevices (C-IED).

Engineering troops are obligatory in almost every Polish Military Contingent abroad. Their main efforts are focused, apart from UN missions, also on stabilization missions. The most problematic was mine clearance in former Yugoslavia, in lraq and Afghanistan. Electronic devices were quite frequently impossible to use du eto the nature of terra in and kinds of mine fields. Sappers also worked under extreme conditions in lraq and Afghanistan, as they were under direct threat of enemy's attack. Counter-lmprovised Explosive Devices (C-IED) system is to cope with such threats.

Contemporary partisan and terrorist operations, defined as asymmetrical, are characterized by massive deployment of mines and improvised explosive devices (IED). It is because of these that both, Israeli and Lebanon (2006) armies and coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq are not able to successfully end their missions. What is even worse, these warfare means have disastrous effect not only on soldiers, but also on civilians. The article deals with the above subject and describes, drawing from experience of coalition soldiers, the attacks and IED deployed by Taliban and Iraqi insurgents and terrorists.

Contemporary bomb attacks are conducted unexpectedly by non-regular armed groups, and are thus called asymmetrical operations. It means that even poorly armed groups are able to face modern armies of this world. The article deals with this issue and discusses the possibility for such threats to occur in the world and in Poland. It also provides data on the number of victim soldiers and civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq in effect of combat operations and terrorist bomb attacks (including the suicidal ones), as well as discusses problems encountered by our soldiers in combat missions.
