True and fake red layers on the objects from archaeological and historical context: microscopic observations

Colored layers on surfaces of objects associated with archaeological and historical context may be of various origins: natural or intentional and in numerous cases their exact identification is not obvious, especially for thousand-year-old objects. Yet, the diagnosing of their nature may constitute an important element for the interpretation of ancient cultures. Examples of red color layers of natural, intentional and unclear origin were chosen and observed to select criteria defining layers of uncertain parentage.

Badania historycznych zapraw z zamku w Czudcu koło Rzeszowa, pochodzących ze średniowiecznego i XVI-wiecznego etapu budowy zamku, wskazują generalnie na konserwatyzm rzemiosła murarskiego: zaprawy są do siebie podobne. Warto jednak zwrócić uwagę na różnice w ilości gruboziarnistego wypełniacza, stosunku wypełniacza do spoiwa oraz sposobu przygotowywania spoiwa (por. Tab. 3,4). Możliwe, że w określonych elementach architektonicznych zamku stosowano odmiennie przygotowane zaprawy (np. we flankach baszty). Niemniej jednak, jakość wypełniacza i spoiwa oraz ich wzajemnego stosunku odbiega od klasycznych wzorców rzymskich i wpływa negatywnie na trwałość zapraw. Procesy korozyjne są w nich mocno zaawansowane.

Examination of historical mortar from the Czudec Castle near Rzeszów (SE Poland), representing Mediaeval and 16th century stages of its construction, point at conservatism of masonry habits: in general mortars are very similar. Certain differences should not be utterly neglected, however: they can be found in proportion of coarse grained filler, filler-to-binder ratio and details in binder preparation. It should be also noted that in various architectonic elements of the castle the ways of mortar preparation may have been specific. Nevertheless, either quality of raw material or workshop were far from Roman recipes and miserable results are seen in poor state of a construction as well as advanced corrosion processes observable in mortar.
