The satisfactory disposal of scrap tires is a major problem worldwide. This paper deals with the scrap vehicle tires management at Poland, which was examined in terms of actual law , especially the UE legislation, where used tires were identilied as a priority waste stream. The technical possibilities of rubber products re-use are presented with special attention given to material recycling as it has become a preferred way of scrap tires treatment. The various applications of recycled tires are described in this paper. Moreover, the results of shear strength tests on shredded tires mixed with waste rock are also included. The results show that the strength of w aste rock increase with the addition of the shredded tires due to good interaction developed between the rock and tyre. Tires are composed of polymeric materials, mainly vulcanized rubber, and therefore are usually not susceptible to corrosion. The leachability results indicate low concentration leaching out of the soil-tyre mixtures. This paper adds evidence to the potential advantages of using soil-tyre mixtures as construction materials.
