The author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.

Problem mieszkaniowy w Afryce jest jednym z wyzwań, które należy rozwiązać, aby Afrykanie mogli odzyskać godność życiową i zabezpieczyć swoje prawa do tradycyjnego życia rodzinnego w akceptowalnych warunkach. W artykule opisano badania nad typowymi rozproszonymi strukturami miejskimi i potrzebą wspierania tego typu struktur osadniczych oraz propozycji wprowadzenia nowego systemu konstrukcji domów, opartym na lekkim szkielecie stalowym, łączącym tradycyjny sposób budowania domów z nowoczesną technologią. Przypadkiem szczególnie analizowanym jest problem mieszkaniowy w Republice Czadu. Autor przedstawia podstawową dyskusję na ten temat i swoje propozycje architektoniczne. Niestety luka między potrzebami mieszkaniowymi w Czadzie a finansową wykonalnością budownictwa mieszkaniowego w tym obszarze sprawia, że projekt ten, już w punkcie wyjścia, jest niezwykle trudny do realizacji bez uzyskania zewnętrznych dotacji.

The author attempts to answer questions, what is beauty in architecture and how to define beauty in relation to sacrum, bearing in mind the subjective and social perception and a need for beauty, especially in the sphere of sacrum. He analyses the workshop of the designer, struggling with form, structure and environment and his vision of beauty. The author analyzes several examples defining relations between beauty and sacrum.

Autor podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytania, czym jest piękno w architekturze i jaką pełni rolę w architekturze sakralnej, mając na uwadze subiektywne i społeczne odczuwanie cech piękna i zapotrzebowanie na piękno, zwłaszcza w sferze sacrum. Analizuje warsztat architekta-twórcy zmagającego się z formą, konstrukcją, substancją i otocze-niem oraz jego wizję piękna. Autor analizuje kilka wybranych przykładów określających relację piękna i sacrum.

In today's rapid civilization development, there is a shift away from the real needs of man, shaped by the centuries-old evolution. Architects and urban planners creating new housing spaces - individual homes and housing estates subconsciously address spatial solutions to the deep needs of human existence, such as security, belonging to a social group, co-operation, empathy, and the like. According to the author, the aware application of the behavioural features, developed in the threshold of civilization development, can indicate those elements of the human habitat, which reconstruction will foster the better planning of the housing environment of the future society.

We współczesnym, gwałtownym rozwoju cywilizacyjnym występuje zjawisko odchodzenia od rzeczywistych potrzeb człowieka, ukształtowanych wskutek wielowiekowej ewolucji gatunkowej. Architekci i urbaniści, tworząc nowe przestrzenie zamieszkania – domy indywidualne i osiedla mieszkaniowe, sięgają podświadomie do rozwiązań przestrzennych, które odpowiadają głębokim potrzebom ludzkiej egzystencji, takim jak bezpieczeństwo, przynależność do grupy społecznej, współdziałanie, empatia itp. Zdaniem autora, świadome sięganie do możliwych do rozpoznania cech społecznych ukształtowanych w początkach rozwoju cywilizacyjnego, może wskazać te elementy ludzkiego habitatu, których odbudowa będzie sprzyjała lepszemu kształtowaniu środowiska mieszkaniowego społeczeństwa przyszłości.

W małych miastach w Polsce zamieszkuje 12,85% ogółu ludności. Miasta małe stanowią ważny element w policentrycznej strukturze kraju. Nowa perspektywa finansowa w ramach programu spójności UE stwarza nowe możliwości wdrożenia trwałych, pozytywnych przekształceń środowiska życia mieszkańców miast. Autor uważa, że choć biegunami wzrostu gospodarczego są duże ośrodki miejskie, inkubatorami przyszłych pokoleń i jednocześnie repozytorium wartości ciągłości kulturowej i polskiej tradycji są małe miasta. Małe miasta mogą też, w łatwiejszy sposób niż miasta duże, stać się poligonem nowej polityki spójności, zwłaszcza w zakresie polityki rewitalizacji zintegrowanej, opartej na założeniach zrównoważonego rozwoju, co stwarza im obecnie istotną szansę rozwojową.

Small towns are important element in the polycentric structure of Poland. The new financial perspective of the EU cohesion program creates for them new development opportunities. Small towns are incubators of future generations and a the repository of culture and traditions. They can become a testing ground for the new cohesion policy in the field and integrated revitalization policies.

The expression “future city” is used to be understand semantically as “ideal city”. The tendencies dominating recently in urbanization of Polish cities, like: urban sprawl, deindustrialization of the country, spatial chaos in urbanized areas and the symptoms of city shrinking, awoke serious concerns about the future of Polish cities, what makes thinking about the future city as the ideal one more difficult. It seems of great importance to undertake strategies of recovery and rescue of the contemporary cities already today, in order to make them ideal for the future.

Pojęcie „miasto przyszłości” wiąże się znaczeniowo z pojęciem „miasta idealnego”. Współczesne dominujące tendencje w urbanizacji miast polskich, takie jak: suburbanizacja, zjawiska deindustrializacji kraju, a także obserwowany chaos przestrzeni zurbanizowanej oraz depopulacja i związane z nią symptomy kurczenia się miast, wzbudzają poważne obawy i nie sprzyjają myśleniu o mieście przyszłości jako mieście idealnym. Istotne staje się podejmowanie działań strategicznych na rzecz poprawy i ratowania miast dla przyszłości już dziś. Miasto przyszłości to miasto demokracji opartej na wiedzy i rozumnym, odpowiedzialnym gospodarowaniu przestrzenią.

Autor rozważa zagadnienie ponadczasowych wartości w architekturze w kontekście czasu szybkich przemian. Uważa, że o ile istnieje consensus, co do uznania wartości historycznych wielu dzieł architektury za dzieła o ponadczasowej wartości, ocena dzieł współczesnych nastręcza wiele kontrowersji. Autor wysuwa tezę, że projektowanie architektury o ponadczasowych cechach jest możliwe. Ostateczna ocena wartości ponadczasowych będzie mogła być określona dopiero po upływie czasu.

Author describes problems of defining the timeless values in architecture in the context of contemporary transformation processes. However there is a consensus concerning these values in terms of historic architectural monuments, evaluation of contemporary architecture is controversial. Author is convinced, that it is possible to design the architecture with timeless values. The final evaluation of those values will be proved however by the time flow.
