Obserwacje z ostatnich lat wykazują, że linia brzegu nabiera coraz większego znaczenia w świadomości prawnej obywateli. Potwierdzeniem tego jest coraz częstsze ustalanie linii brzegu w procesach formalno- administracyjnych dotyczących wód płynących i gruntów nimi pokrytych. Prawne konsekwencje linii brzegu wymuszają ustalanie jej w sposób jednoznaczny, możliwy do odtworzenia na gruncie w każdym czasie. Możliwość taką daje ustalanie linii brzegu z wykorzystaniem metod geodezyjnych. Ważne wydaje się zatem scharakteryzowanie procesu ustalania linii brzegu z geodezyjnego punktu widzenia oraz pokazanie zadań niezbędnych do wykonania przez geodetów w trakcie ustalania linii brzegu. Połączenie wiedzy hydrologicznej z technologią geodezyjną nadaje linii brzegu charakter uniwersalny.

Observations of the last several years indicate that the citizens' awareness of the legal importance of shoreline is growing. It is confirmed by the fact that the shoreline is the more and more often determined in the formal and administrative processes concerning flowing waters and lands they cover. Legal consequences of the shoreline necessitate its unequivocal determination, reproducible on the land at any time. It is possible when the shoreline is determined with the use of geodetic methods. Therefore, it seems important to characterise the process of the shoreline determination from the geodetic point of view and to present tasks necessary to be carried out by geodesists during the shoreline determination. The combination of hydrological knowledge and geodetic technology gives the shoreline a universal character. Thus the legal aspect of the shoreline may be expressed in the utilitarian mode and becomes easier to enforce, e.g. with regard to the land property right.
