This article presents results from a research dissertation that aimed to discover to what extent low-cost airlines have had an impact on coach travel between Poland and the UK. A considerable amount of attention was paid to the recent growth of passenger traffic between the two countries. The withdrawal of UK restrictions on workers from new Member States, as a consequence of the EU enlargement in 2004, was one of the major factors that contributed to this growth. In the meanwhile, the EU expansion was accompanied by liberalisation of the airline market in Poland. The immediate effect of this process was the formation of low-cost airlines that made air travel more affordable and attracted many new passengers including Polish job seekers looking for inexpensive and simple ways to travel. The growing travel demand has also been accommodated by coach services that were traditionally very popular among Polish travelers even before 2004. For instance, in 2003 over half of the visits made by Polish residents to the UK were made by coach. This proportion has declined in the next year as a result of the rapidly growing air competition. However, it has been found that due to a complicated and discriminatory airline booking system, and the extensive coach network, the coach market still exists and seems to be a popular way of travelling among Polish passengers. As part of this research, it has also been discovered that the growth of airline operations and large competition within the coach market have put smaller coach operators at risk and expansion of operations to/from smaller towns in Poland and the UK is one of the key solutions to survive in the market.
