The article is an attempt to show the relationship between architectural ideas and concrete matter in the implementation of Polish architecture of the beginning of the 21st century. The first part shows examples in which the perfection of architecture is associated not only with the rational principles of 20th century architecture, but also with what we define as the search for aesthetics in appropriate expression of forms.

Druga część pokazuje przykłady, w których doskonałość architektury wiąże się nie tylko z zasadami metafory architektury XX wieku, ale także z tym, co definiujemy jako poszukiwanie estetyki w odpowiedniej geometrii form.

The purpose of the article is to define the range of academic-didactic subject practiced in The Chair of Elementary Architecture of WAPK, known as Elementary Architecture – Between Rationalism and Poetic of Form. The wide academic range, as well as the aim of the research, allow only to present several aspects of defining contemporary architectural space. They aim to establish the origins, sources of architectural ideas in broad reference to structural rationalism and resulting from it poetic of form.

Szeroki zakres badawczy i cel poszukiwań pozwalają jedynie na poruszenie niektórych aspektów definiowania współczesnych przestrzeni architektonicznej, których sensem jest ustanownie źródła idei architektonicznej w szerokich odniesieniach do strukturalnego racjonalizmu i z niego wynikającej poetyki formy architektonicznej.

Pomaga nam w tym jedynie odczytanie i interpretacja wzorców z dalekiej i bliższej przeszości.

The article discusses the question of light and darkness as the tools for creating figurative and abstract meanings in architecture. The lessons of light and darkness in architecture are the way of defining architectural space through the phenomenon whose nature is difficult to express and the essence is difficult to perceive. The only help we ave is the interpretation of models from close and distant past.

It is a common sentiment that concrete is the symbol and essence of materiality in architecture. For many designers the experience of concrete – the liquid stone – is the moment of getting the primeval insight into the nature of architecture and a confirmation that all that exists in the sphere of architecture has some form and matter. From this source spring the works of many an architect. In the following article three examples of Parisian architectural designs are presented, ones that have had influence over the development of ideas in modern architecture. Concrete buildings of Auguste Perret, Le Corbusier and the Beckmann N’Thépé atelier constitute the proof that confirms the thesis that some ideas remain, while others pass – the concrete matter, even though it is subjected to changes, has remained for a hundred years firmly united with the thought that brings the physical shape of architecture to fruition.

W powszechnym odczuciu beton jest symbolem i kwintesencją materialności architektury. Dla wielu twórców doświadczenie betonu-"lanego kamienia" jest chwilą źródłowego, pierwotnego wglądu w naturę architektury i potwierdzeniem, że wszystko, co istnieje w architekturze, posiada jakąś formę oraz jakąś materię. Z tego źródła wypływa dzieło wielu architektów. W artykule przedstawiono przykłady trzech paryskich realizacji architektonicznych mających wpływ na rozwój idei współczesnej architektury. Betonowe budynki Auguste'a Perreta, Le Corbusiera i atelier Beckmann N'Thépé są dowodami potwierdzającymi tezę o trwaniu jednych idei i przemijaniu innych – materia betonowa, choć również podlega przemianom, trwa już od stu lat w zespoleniu z myślą realizującą fizyczny kształt architektury.

Creating a relationship between space and the matter of a work of art has resulted in the fact that the relationships between the exterior and the interior are more important than ever before during the development of modern architecture. Together with the modernist revolution, the engagement of creators in surpassing the threshold of the visible exterior to enter the purely internal plane became the basis for the most radical manifestation of freedom and everything that is connected with defining the new architecture.

Nadanie relacji pomiędzy przestrzenią a materią dzieła spowodowało, że kwestia związków pomiędzy zewnętrznym i wewnętrznym nigdy nie była tak ważna, jak w czasach rozwoju architektury współczesnej. Właściwie należałoby powiedzieć, że począwszy od modernistycznej rewolucji zaangażowanie twórców w przekraczanie progu widzialnego zewnętrza na plan czysto wewnętrzny stało się podstawą najradykalniejszej manifestacji wolności i wszystkiego, co można by było nazwać definiowaniem nowej architektury.

The creator of a drawing in the process of unifying idea and architectural material is giving that relation a suitable aesthetic dimension, trying to see in it a clear unity of form and matter. Recording, sketching, drawing – in the face of such delimitation, establish an appropriate range of imagination and organize thinking about architecture ‒ from the idea of illustrating the shape of the intention to making it materialize. Drawing requires an effort of mind and thoughts, matter - that of ordering and selection.

Twórca w rysunkowym procesie jednoczenia idei i tworzywa architektonicznego nadaje tej relacji wymiaru estetycznego, starając się dostrzec w niej klarowną jedność formy i materii. Zapis, szkic, rysunek – wobec tak wytyczonego zagadnienia relacji idei i materii ustanawia zakres wyobrażenia i uporządkowania myślenia o architekturze – od idei obrazującej intencję aż do kształtu zrealizowania w konkretnej materii. Rysunek wymagał wysiłku umysłu i myśli, materia – uporządkowania i wyboru.

W poszukiwaniu doskonałości architektury, twórcy współcześni zwracają się ku kształtom związanym z tradycją uformowań uznawanych za kanony piękna i harmonii. I chociaż wielkie idee modernizmu odarty formę architektoniczną z ornamentu, a wyobraźnię architektów, ze zrozumienia form historycznych, to jednak pozostawiły w świadomości twórców współczesnych poetycki „ślad", dzięki któremu mogą być uczestnikami nieustannej gry z przeszłością - gry opartej na metaforach i interpretacjach rzeczy z przeszłości. Dziś beton zastąpił kamień, a więc wydaje się, że to właśnie on stał się tą materią, którą należy uznać za doskonałą dla zinterpretowania na nowo starych znaczeń i archetypów.

In the quest for architecture excellence, contemporary creators turn to shapes associated with the tradition of forms regarded as canons of beauty and harmony. Although the big ideas of modernism striped architectural form of ornamentation, and the imagination of architects, from the understanding of historical forms, in the modern creators' minds poetry «footprint» through which they can still be participants of continuous game with the past - game based on metaphors and interpretations of things from the past. Today, concrete replaced the stone, so it seems that it became the material to be considered as excellent for re-interpret the old meanings and archetypes.

From hundred years as well concrete has been a main instrument to create an architectural form. The paper is also an attempt to present relationships between architectural idea and concrete material - two aspects creating expression and innovation of contemporary architecture.
