In the present climate of fast-paced and unplanned urban change, the problem of a lost identity of space and place is becoming very timely. What defines the identity of a place is its history and cultural as well as spatial heritage. But the identity of place has also received attention from more recent explorations in architecture and urban studies. Architectural space has become an endemic element of our surroundings, our living, working and leisure environment. Being an integral ingredient of our daily existence, it has also become a part of human life, shaping our mentality, behaviour and the sense of beauty. However, apart from its aesthetic values, architects should endow their works with some additional qualities, such as usability, durability and convenience. Seen in this way, architecture is an art of responsible creation of space, an art of conscious decision-making and right choices.

The new post-modern approach to city planning, which started in the sixties, resulted in a significant amount of research. The thoeries and methodologies then conceived continue to be developed to this day. They represent two main streams of research. A humanistic approach focused predominantly on the man-environment relationship while in the morphological approach the focus was to examine the relationships among various spatial elements, to include their development process. Unfortunately, neither architects nor urban planners take sufficient advantage of the findings that this body of research provides.
