31 stycznia 1998 roku Albert Gore, ówczesny wiceprezydent Stanów Zjednoczonych, wygłosił w California Science Center w Los Angeles przemówienie zatytułowane The Digital Earth: Understanding our planet in the 2pt Century. W przemówieniu tym naszkicował koncepcję wirtualnego globu (Digital Earth), definiując ją jako A multi-resolution, threedimensional representation oj the planet, into which we can embed vast quantities of georeferenced data (wielorozdzielcza, trójwymiarowa reprezentacja planety, w której można umieścić duże ilości danych geograficznych; Gore, 1998). Głównym motywem tego przemówienia było podkreślenie znaczenia pozyskiwanych danych geograficznych dla edukacji i rozwoju nauki, a także wskazanie, jak niski był w tym czasie poziom ich wykorzystania. Stąd daleko idąca propozycja zmiany nastawienia do rozpowszechniania danych geograficznych, której metaforą stał się właśnie termin Digital Earth.

The Digital Earth Initiative, presented in 1998 by the Vice President of the United States of America, Albert Gore, has developed in 10 years in a manner that went beyond the original ambitious goals. The rapid advance of the Internet technology, the emergence of virtual globes in the first half of the decade, the unprecedented scale of contemporary environmental data acquisition with remote sensing, and finally the development of mobile technology has completely changed the context of the Digital Earth s concept. For several years it has also been clear that the technological advances shape in a similar w~ spatial data infrastructures being built in an increasing number of countries. Near future may thus demonstrate the convergence of virtual globes and spatial information infrastructures into one global geospatial system. The aim of this paper is to look to the future and the idea of Digital Earth technology in light of these developments, primarily in terms of the natural and social sciences. In our view, this involves reflections on the progress of virtual globes and infrastructures for spatial information that change the relationship between human beings - as cognizant subjects - and space, the object of their cognition. Reflection on these issues at this stage is therefore very relevant. We hope this paper contributes to the assessment of what the future brings, as well as assists future development in desired directions.

SDI development in Poland - first results from a national survey

W związku z INSPIRE, w Polsce prowadzone są prace mające na celu rozwój infrastruktury danych przestrzennych (SDI) nowej generacji. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki ogólnopolskiej ankiety dotyczącej stosowania geoinformacji w urzędach i instytucjach administracji publicznej. Wstępne wyniki ujawniają istnienie wielu przeszkód dla rozwoju SDI, ale respondenci również wskazują, w jaki sposób przeszkody te mogą być przezwyciężone. Za największe przeszkody rozwoju SDI uznano: wykorzystywanie w wielu dziedzinach geoinformacji (GI) nadal w formie analogowej, a nie cyfrowej, prowadzoną w tym zakresie politykę oraz przyjęte standardy, jak tez problemy wiążące się ze stosowaniem danych referencyjnych, różnorodność stosowanych formatów danych, które powinny być ujednolicone, brak dostatecznej wiadomości w zakresie zarówno programów krajowych jak i Unii Europejskiej, brak środków na finansowanie prac na szczeblu samorządowym, brak młodych, dobrze wykształconych kadr, szczególnie dotkliwie odczuwany przez samorządy lokalne. Ankieta była upowszechniona wiosną 2005 r. i jest ciągle analizowana, przedstawione wyniki mają więc charakter wstępny i mogą być skorygowane.
