Przykład państw, które rozwinęły już produkcję biogazu, takich jak Niemcy i Szwecja, wskazuje, że warto rozważyć przeniesienie ich doświadczeń na polski rynek. W obu krajach potrzeba było kilkunastu lat, aby rozwinąć produkcję biogazu. Należy zatem sądzić, że jeśli w Polsce zaczną w najbliższym czasie powstawać biogazownie to w ciągu kilkunastu lat będzie możliwe częściowe, a nawet całkowite zastąpienie gazu ziemnego biometanem.

Renewable energy sources are the future of energy production. One of the possibilities, strongly recommended for Poland, is to digest biomass and produce biogas, as an energy carrier. An example of countries, such as Germany and Sweden, which have developed biogas production, shows, that it is worth to think about adaptation of their experiences into Polish market. Biogas could be used for electrical energy and heat production. Big experience in this matter has Germany. Last year biogas plants started-up with total electrical power of 600 MW in this country. These installations produce about 4.8 TWźh of electrical energy per year. Or, if we calculate it for the biomethane - about 1.2 billion m3 of "green gas" per year. In Sweden very often biogas is upgraded to natural gas quality - biomethane. There are working about 30 installations for separation carbon dioxide from methane. Biomethane produced in this way is used mostly as a fuel for vehicles - there are more than 11 500 cars filled with such fuel. Second possibility, which is common in this country, is to let biomethane in to the natural gas grid. Both countries needed some years to develop biogas production. So, if in Poland biogas plants start to arise in a nearest future, than within next few years there would be possible partial or even complete replacement of natural gas by biomethane. Polish biomethane production potential is large, if the substrate for biogas production would be biomass. Taking 25% of Polish agricultural area for such production we would be able to get about 22 525 million m3 of biomethane per year. This could cover about 20% of our national energy demand. As biomethane has such a big potential, this energy source should be taken under consideration.
