Content available remote Occurrence of metal elements in cut -to-length pine timber
EN
The request of the timber market for good wood quality and requires an examination of metal elements in timber. The quality of contaminated wood is inconsistent with the contract and makes this product less valuable. Both, sellers and buyers want to reduce or to eliminate the problem. The publication compares the percentage content of metal elements in cut-to-length pine timber, which comes from selected Forest Districts belonging to three Regional Directorates of the State Forests. The wood was delivered in two successive years. The aim was also to find the causes of the presence of metal elements in the wood, especially in the Forest Districts, where the percentage was higher than in the other ones.

The aim of this study is to determine changes in volume and share of quality grades in pine timber depending on the adopted cut to length variant. For the purpose of this study one plot was selected, on which final cutting was performed. The plot was located in the Lipka Forest District, the Białobłocie Forest Division, in compartment 98a. The experimental site was covered by a pine stand aged 110 years. It was decided for this analysis to select trees meeting the dimension and quality requirements for grades A, B and C. The whole stem was measured and the long timber was cut into logs of 4 m, 5 m and 6 m in length. Next using calipers the smallest diameter under bark was determined for each log. These measurements made it possible to establish the volume and quality and dimension grades of the whole stem as well as those of logs, into which it was cut to length. Analyses showed that the volume of that timber assortment changes at cut to length logging of pine long timber. In the case of 4m logs the volume increases, while for 5m and 6m logs it decreases. It was also observed that after cutting to length of logs from long timber the share of higher grades decreases considerably to the advantage of lower grades.

The aim of this paper is to determine the change in value of pine timber depending on the type of cutting to length. For the purpose of this study one plot was selected, on which final cutting was performed. The plot was located in the Lipka Forest District, the Białobłocie Forest Division, in compartment 98a. The experimental site was covered by a pine stand aged 110 years. It was decided for this analysis to select trees meeting dimension and quality requirements for grades A, B and C. These measurements made it possible to establish the value of the whole stem as well as the value of logs, into which it was cut to length. These analyses showed that at cutting of pine long timber into logs their value changes. The value of timber decreased in each adopted timber cutting variant to produce logs. It was finally stated that from the financial point of view cutting of timber to length into logs is not profitable to the seller.

The paper presents a comparison of the density of seven provenances of spruce trees, grown on an experimental plot located at Siemianice Forest Experimental Station. This plot is a unique research area on which observations concerning the growth of spruce trees of different provenances have been conducted for 41 years. The conditions in which the trees grow are very similar and it may be assumed that provenance is the element differentiating growth and wood properties. Trees growing on this plot have reached such large dimensions that it was possible to collect experimental material in the form of blocks, from which wood samples for further tests were obtained. Analyses were conducted on 651 samples collected from spruce trees of 7 provenances (Orawa, Międzygórze, Nowe Ramuki, Istebna Bukowiec, Kartuzy, Zwierzyniec 281B, Zwierzyniec Lubelski). The results indicated that wood of each individual provenance differed significantly in terms of the analysed trait. It was found that wood coming from Zwierzyniec Lubelski had the greatest values of basic density, while the lowest values were recorded for the Orawa provenance. Moreover, the examined provenances were divided into four groups, thus creating a ranking list of provenances in terms of the basic wood density of Norway spruce.

Wood macrostructure of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst) coming from an experimental site in the Siemianice Forest Experimental Station. The paper presents results of studies concerning the effect of provenance on the share of latewood in annual rings. Analyses were conducted on seven provenances grown on an experimental site located in the Siemianice Forest Experimental Station. It was established which of the investigated provenances have the greatest share of latewood in annual rings. It was also investigated which of the provenances differ significantly in terms of the analysed trait. Measurements were taken on discs collected from breast height of mean sample trees.

Proportion of sapwood and heartwood in stems of European Larch (Larix decidua Mill.) origin from provenances experimental plot. The aim of this work was to state wether the wood from different provenances of European Larch (Larix decidua Mill.) show differences in proportion of sapwood and heartwood in stems. Research were carried out on 56 trees erepresenting 6 provenances of larch: Bliżyn (10), Czerniejewo (5), Konstancjewo-Tomkowo (3), Krościenko (15), Rawa Mazowiecka-Trębaczew (6), Skarżysko (9). This plot is a part of unique research area established in 1966. Results show important differences between heartwood-sapwood proportion for two provenances: Krościenko - the heighest proportion (largest volume of heartwood) and Bliżyn the lowes proportion (least volume of heartwood). The other provenances show similar proportions.
