Threats to civil aviation can be divided into conventional and unconventional. Their nature and effects are very diverse. Unconventional threats are less predictable and often bring equally severe consequences as the conventional ones, or sometimes even more severe. They include chemical, biological and radioactive agents, aircraft used as live missiles, and, in some cases, cyber weapons. The article shows that the problem of unconventional threats in civil aviation is significant, and its underestimation may bring tragic consequences.

Airborne terrorism is a growing problem in the modern world due to the continuing development of aviation, its sensitivity and complexity, and the dynamics of terrorism. Specific actions need to be taken to prevent or reduce the effects of terrorism. These include the definition of infrastructure requirements for airports and aircraft, various barriers and counter–terrorism. Their formulation, character and intensification depends on the specific region and level of threat.
