The new organisational structure enabling the co-operation with NATO commands is the effect of the Armed Forces restructuring, caused by the necessity to adapt to the Alliance actions. Also the procedures of land forces command, now being implementated, agree with procedures accepted by NATO [ATP-35(B)]. Computer tools that facilitated the work of staffs in the area of operation planning have become invalid due to the change of operation equipment, structures and procedures. A gap to support the process of command (planning in particular) is its consequence. In the time of universal computer use and actually the lack or technical limitations there is a great need for computer support in many processes - particularly in land forces, poorly equipped in automated command systems in comparison to the air force or the navy. Computers in a work place have become so common that not using them in planning which is an important stage of command process is a severe difficulty. They will be used, however, after developing the operation algorithms of selected applications.

Contemporary battlefield poses very high requirements for command systems. These requirements concern, first of all, efficiency, reaction speed, reliability and survivability. Changeable environment and the development of combat means force constant improve-ment of command systems in order to eliminate mentioned above differences in an organisational range, i.e. bringing structural changes, methodological range - connected with improved command methods, and technical one - taking place due to command automation. Command effectiveness in such a situation is often assigned by modern reconnaissance and communication means and by processing of data, development of which is based on contemporary technology, computer science and other related areas. The improvement of forces command process should disengage the chief of staff and staff officers from a number of laborious and mechanical activities that can be conducted faster and better using computer methods. Command support is a firm development tendency of all modem armies, despite current political situation. It is the factor to strengthen the forces’ combat potential and this process is irreversible in the present situation. Command support is based on the most advanced technologies and methods. Unfortunately, the instability of existing organisational structures and command procedures, incoherence of efforts for automated command system development and problems to ensure their compatibility (ensuring appropriate standards) with systems functioning in NATO structures are the barriers. The advancement of works on command support in selective Polish Armed Forces branches is different. The most advanced are the works concerning command system and combat means management in the Air Force and Air Defence of the Land Forces and the Navy.
