The paper presents basic problems faced while constructing and implementing SERVBED - a system for computer aided management of beds in hospital wards, designed to optimize utilisation of hospital beds in various conditions. The possibility of continuous monitoring of bed occupancy (patients' names, room and bed numbers, names of current bed managers) has been investigated and the system accessibility protection as well as automatic data collection for the needs of reports and short- and long-term prognoses have been studied. The paper discusses certain ways of tackling the questions under consideration, and tries to find optimal solutions. It also takes multimedia software into account to ensure effective communication with the system. Final remarks and conclusions of general nature together with those referring specifically to SERVBED conclude the paper.

The presentation of basic notions is followed by a brief historical outline of the development of human thought that eventually gave rise to cybernetics, the general theory of control with feedback. At each stage of this development, information proves to be of unquestionable significance constituting an essential factor for delineation of the process trajectory in a given system. The paper presents a number of examples that indicate the importance of both feedback and information in the process of adaptive control, including processes in technology, biology, and economics, display ubiquity of control systems with feedback, and show the fundamental role of the correct information in the proper functioning of such systems. Natural processes are also discussed to point out certain analogies between adaptive control systems and elements of the ecosystem.

Content available remote A modern technologies in medical expert systems
EN
The paper presents organization and performance of the module structure expert system for medicine and discussion on certain information technology problems connected with building and exploitation of the system. The considered problems mainly deal with knowledge acquisition automation and hypermedia applications for well communication. After discussion some remarks on conception of knowledge acquisition and dialog organization as well as some conclutions relative to their implementability and utilizability are also given.

Content available remote Multimedia elements in the PHARMACY2 system
EN
The paper describes the PHARMACY2 system being a modification of PHARMACY1 worked out earlier by the authors and implemented at the Chemotherapy Clinic of the Medical University of Łódź. The main change lies in the introduction of multimedia to the system, which improves communication capabilities of the system and enables better assistance of medical education. In the system a special emphasis is put on cytostatic drugs.

Content available remote Knowledge acquisition problems in medical expert systems
EN
After characterizing the main tasks of medical and ecological expert system the paper presents certain problems in knowledge acqusition automation, such as identification of patient states and nature phenomenas or their description followed by formalization and coding. The general rules of knowledge acquisition automation are first presented and then reffered to medical and ecological expert systems. The final remarks cover the comparison of the ideas presented, their implementability and utilizability.

Content available remote A new modified version of the training system for diagnosing
EN
The paper presents a concept of an educational computer system for medical students designed to help them learn oncological diagnosing. The discussed system is the third version of the original system assisting training in diagnosing, which differs from the previous ones in a much wider application of multimedia. It has been implemented and tested at the Chemotherapy Clinic of the Medical University of Lodz.

Content available remote Telemedicine in education assistance of oncology
EN
The paper presents a conception of computer system designed to assist oncology education based on telemedicine. The system is of module structure and at the present stage of implementation special attention is being paid to patterns for histopathological examinations, information on drugs with aggressive impact on human organism together with suitable instructions on their usage, as well as to certain elements of the training simulator module. The system is being implemented and its elements are subject to more detailed preliminary examinations.
