In the paper meteorogical causes of disastrous precipitation which occurred in Poland in three rainfall cycles in July 1997, i.e. 4-8.07, 18-20.07 and 25-26.07 were analysed. The appropriate types of meteorogical situations were ascribed to them. The precipitation height in each rainfall cycle on the background of long-term normal was assessed. It was stated that decadal precipitation sums in some regions have exceeded 800 percent of normal. The extent of flood in the Odra and Vistula rivers basins was estimated as well. The analysis of historical materials proved that precipitation in the Odra river basin in July 1997 have been catastrophic, and have resulted in flood, which have reached an extent of natural disaster.
