W artykule przedstawiono niezwykle aktualny problem poszukiwania genius loci w centrach dużych miast. Odkrywanie, definiowanie i wreszcie kreowanie znaczeń w istniejącej przestrzeni miejskiej staje się nową próba odczytania jej "języka". Przestrzenie stają się "znakiem" miasta - powszechnie z nim utożsamiane lub stanowiące miejsca utrwalone w świadomości jego mieszkańców i znaczących dla jego historii wydarzeń, zyskują szczególną "aurę" miejsc prestiżu. Taką rangę zyskał zarówno plac Saski w Warszawie jak i Rynek Główny w Krakowie. Taką rangę straciły, stanowiące istotne elementy struktury śródmieścia Szczecina - Konigsplatz (obecnie Plac Solidarności), a także Skagerplatz (obecnie Plac Mickiewicza).

In the article has been presented current problem concerning on searching genius loci in the centre of big cities. Discovery, definition and also creation of implications in existing urban space is going to be a new trial of interpretation of its "language". Spaces are becoming a "sign" of the city - commonly identified with them or being a place of important historical events are getting specific atmosphere of "prestige places". This dignity has gained Saski Square in Warsaw, as well as Main Market Square in Cracow. This dignity have lost, very important in the structure of the Szczecin centre - Konigsplatz (Solidarności Sq.) and also Skagerplatz (Mickiewicza Sq.)

Sposób formułowania pojęcia krajobrazu zależny jest od kryteriów oceny, jakimi posługuje się dana dziedzina nauki. Inna jest klasyfikacja dokonana przez geografa, geologa, ekonomistę, inna przez architekta czy urbanistę. Inna wreszcie przez etnografa, jak też inna w rozumieniu krajobrazu przez ekologa. Podejmując próbę zdefiniowania problemu w sposób uogólniony, można kategoryzację typu krajobrazu sprowadzić do podstawowej dychotomii i skrajnie występującej sprzeczności pomiędzy pojęciem, pod jakim rozumie się "krajobraz naturalny", a pod jakim rozumieć należy "krajobraz kulturowy".

The way of formulating the notion of a landscape depends on the criteria of evaluation as applied by the given discipline of science. Classification made by a geographer is different from that made by a geologist, an economist, an architect, or an urban planner. Quite different are also classifications made by ethnographers, or ecologists. When trying to define the issue in a generalised way, one can reduce the landscape categorization to the basic dichotomy and contradictions between the notion of a "natural landscape" and that of a "cultural landscape" that occur in extreme cases.

There is no doubt that the comprehension of the architecture today differs from the definitions which were accepted, well-known and familiar in 60ties. The architecture as the clear-cut, unambiguous term no longer exists, and the limits of its understanding are no longer determined by physical space, but are fixed by the space of intellectual comprehension. The new sensitivity leads up to the new formula of beauty: between the ability to comprehend and the ability to represent the content of the concept occurs the compatibility, which is the source of the aesthetics experience.

However occurrence of space "in-between" in architectonical assumptions can give a positive picture, in town-planning it is necessary to strive to dispose of such accidental and unwanted sets. It is essential to use tourist and natural values of suburban communes to create natural directions when shaping hiking and cycling tourist routes which originate in an urban structure fluently transforming in areas of a high landscape and natural values. In a similar way it is needed to shape development of building estate sets which should harmoniously connect a city with local terrain. Together with economical development of an urban center it is obvious that its borders will be submitted to changes. Former suburban areas will be imbided by the city organism, but the area mentioned earlier will not disappear but undergo displacement. Therefore the suburban landscape needs to be formed in such a way that it has a natural and coherent connection with suburban terrains. In such a way it will be possible to avoid town-planning chaos in a new city structure and gain an ordered spatial organism, which exposes landscape values, fluently changing from one set to another. Such effects are not possible to be gained without elaborating a common, uniform plan of development of the areas of an urban complex with suburban communities.
