Reliability estimation of underground horizontal fuel tank limit states

Fuel tanks are designed with regard to standard loads and operating conditions. The investigations of the paper show the impact of such factors as tank corrosion and other means on variation of stress fields and deformation of the underground horizontal tank shell. Introduction of probabilistic methods allows for structural reliability assessment. While the computational time of the entire tank FEM model is high the preliminary analysis is restricted to structural part only. The analysis makes it possible to optimize the structure with regard to construction costs.

Imperfekcje geometryczne zbiorników, silosów i powłok siatkowych mogą znacząco wpłynąć na ich nośność, a więc powinny być one uwzględniane w obliczeniach komputerowych i w procesie projektowania. Wykazano, że przy podstawowych obciążeniach, działających na tego typu konstrukcje, tj. podciśnieniu oraz naporze wiatru i śniegu (w przypadku powłok siatkowych), wykazują wyraźne różnice w porównaniu z analogicznymi wynikami dla tych konstrukcji o idealnej geometrii. Wprowadzenie metod probabilistycznych do projektowania oraz szacowanie niezawodności konstrukcji staje się coraz bardziej dostępne i powinno być uwzględniane w projektowaniu.

Geometric imperfections of tanks, silos and mesh coatings can significantly affect their carrying capacity so they should be taken into account in computer calculations and in the design process. It has been shown that at basic loads acting on this type of constructions, i.e. negative pressure, wind and snow pressure (in the case of mesh coatings), they show clear differences in comparison with the analogous results for these structures with ideal geometry. The introduction of probabilistic methods into the design and estimation of the reliability of the structure is becoming increasingly available and should be taken into account in the design process.
