The paper presents the experimental and numerical investigations of a novel design of a pneumatic life raft in calm water conditions. Two main issues were considered: the life raft performance under tow and its resistance in calm water conditions. The experiment and CFD simulations were performed by using the full scale prototype to eliminate the scale effect. The towing tank tests confirmed the results of numerical computations. The compatibility of the results of numerical and experimental tests was high mainly because the new life raft does not deform under the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads. The characteristics similar to rigid body behaviour result mainly from a new construction and materials used for manufacturing the life raft.

Podkreślono znaczenie badań modelowych wykonywanych w skali rzeczywistej, przywołując konkretne przykłady. Opisane badanie oporu pneumatycznej tratwy ratunkowej, wykonane w warunkach wody spokojnej, na basenie holowniczym Ośrodka Hydromechaniki Okrętu CTO, zaprezentowane zostało w kontekście badań prototypu nowego środka ratunkowego, przeprowadzonych przez Katedrę Eksploatacji Statku Akademii Morskiej w Gdyni.

This publication presents methods forecasting the hydrodynamic properties of floating objects. It emphasized the importance of model tests performed in the real scale citing specific examples. The described resistance test of the pneumatic life raft, performed in calm water conditions, in the towing tank of Ship Hydromechanics Division of Ship Design and Research Center, is presented in the context of a prototype of a new means of rescue, conducted by the Department of Ship Operation, Navigational Faculty, Gdynia Maritime University.

Aby sprostać coraz większym wyzwaniom jakie kreują się przed spedytorami, armatorami i terminalami należy zainwestować w nowe technologie. W artykule przedstawiono innowacyjny system spedycyjny, który powstał z myślą o branży spedycji morskiej. Program ma na celu usprawnienie i przyspieszenie procesu przepływu informacji pomiędzy partnerami biznesowymi gdyż jest to element łączący wszystkie firmy i od niego zależy owocność dalszej współpracy.

With a stable Polish economic situation and investments made in port infrastructure, there has been growing importance of Polish ports and forwarding market development in Poland. To satisfy growing challenges they create in front of shippers, ship owners and terminal must invest in new technologies. The paper presents an innovative system forwarding, which was created for the maritime shipping industry. The program aims to improve and accelerate the process of information flow between business partners because it is the element linking all business and wellbeing depends on it further cooperation.

The article presents from the perspective of one hundred years the work of Maria Curie-Skłodowska, which in many cases was ahead of the state of knowledge of the time. It opened new horizons and for this reason we made many digressions. The fact of awarding her the Nobel Prize twice is a sensation enough to present the values of careful activity of the Nobel Prize Committee that emphasizes the importance of Maria’s achievements. A significant element of Maria Sklodowska-Curie’s achievements was still mysterious character of the radiation in her time, and only chemical approach made it possible to organise the phenomena and explain the origin of the radiation. The essence of the research was an arduous separation of components following the track of growing radiation of successive fractions of preparations. This research was a start of the technology of educement of dispersed elements in great mass of materials. We underline the paramount role of the chemical research Maria Skłodowska conducted while still in Warsaw in the laboratories of the Museum of Industry and Agriculture under the guidance of an excellent chemist Józef Jerzy Boguski. Her research in Paris was the origin of the semi-commercial scale in chemistry and setting aside a special shed outside the university building was the beginning of the institutes that now function beyond universities and are key element of scientific and technical progress. Technology of splitting developed by Maria Skłodowska-Curie was applied also by other radiochemists, e.g. By Otto Hahn. Lively movement in radiochemistry of her lifetime resulted in Maria’s disputes with e.g. German chemist Marckwald, who questioned the originality of polonium. The scientific disputes like this one Maria won triumphantly although in several others she had to accept opponents’ argument, as in the case of radon. Her experiments were planned with utmost rationality as it was with the rejection of the hypothesis saying that radioactivity was transferred from the outer space or from the sun. A great part of Maria Sklodowska-Curie’s work was connected with biology which was demonstrated by describing in mathematical terms, for the first time in the history of radiobiology, nonexistent at that time, of the phenomenon of inactivation of bacteria by ionizing radiation. We emphasize difficult conditions for the health of the radiochemists of the time but we don’t find any proof that there was any influence of ionizing radiation on Maria’s health. She must have absorbed much greater doses of radiation during her heroic work in the mobile radiological surgery at the front of the 1st World War. We don’t think it’s appropriate to speculate rashly about contamination with alpha emitters. Unfortunately, due to her family’s protest it was impossible to collect samples of remains before their relocation to the Pantheon in Paris.

Preparation of scaffolds for tissue regeneration requires elucidation of chemical and physical processes induced by ionizing radiation during radiation sterilization of polymeric materials used for these purposes. Such treatment induces many unintended and desired reactions that lead either to degradation or cross-linking of macromolecules. It was found that in poly(ester urethane) the ester segments are responsible predominantly for radiation induced phenomena. Some radicals generated following irradiation were identified under cryogenic conditions. Upon exposure to sterilizing dose cross-linking was confirmed on the basis of rheological changes in melted polymers. The results obtained by EPR spectroscopy and DRS revealed a relatively high susceptibility of poly(ester urethanes) on oxidation.

Metodą spektroskopii EPR zbadano wpływ promieniowania gamma na poli(siloksanouretan) zbudowany z giętkich segmentów oligodimetylosiloksanowych i sztywnych aromatycznych segmentów uretanowych. Stwierdzono, że wszystkie rodniki indukowane promieniowaniem jonizującym ulegają w obecności tlenu konwersji do rodników nadtlenkowych, będących prekursorami wielu grup funkcyjnych zawierających tlen. Proces przebiega w zakresie temperatur odpowiadających przejściu szklistemu domen siloksanowych tj. powyżej 150 K. Utlenianie zapobiega sieciowaniu zachodzącemu pomiędzy rodnikami z centrum zlokalizowanym na atomach węgla, natomiast inicjuje tworzenie nowych grup polarnych i mostków tlenowych pomiędzy łańcuchami. Zatem obróbka radiacyjna znacząco modyfikuje charakter poliuretanu, nawet wtedy, jeśli jeden z jego segmentów (aromatyczne pierścienie segmentów uretanowych) wykazują wyjątkowo dużą odporność na promieniowanie jonizujące.

The influence of gamma-rays on poly(siloxaneurethane) constructed from the soft phase of polydimethylsiloxane chains and hard aromatic urethane segments, was studied by EPR method under cryogenic conditions. It was found that all radicals included by irradiation convert to peroxyl radical, precursor of many groups containing oxygen. The process starts in the range of temperature corresponding to glass transition of the siloxane domains, i.e. above 150 K. Oxidation inhibits cross-linking between carbon-centred radicals and initiates both formation of additional polar groups and oxygen bridges between chains. Thus radiation treatment considerably modifies character of polyurethane even if one of its segment, i.e. aromatic rings of urethane, is extremely resistant towards irradiation.

The reactivity of N-methyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazoline methyl sulfates -salts of cycloadducts of aliphatic nitrile oxides and methyl and phenyl esters p-substituted cinnamic acids -has been studied. The reactions were carried out with the addition of various molar amounts of sodium cyanide, in a homogeneous system, an aprotic solvent DMSO and at different temperatures.
