The aim of this study was to assess the guantity and to characterize the microbial contamination of air and the surfaces of leather in 4 national tanneries of different production specificity. Tanneries processing hides showed higher microbial contamination of the air, the surface and material, than those processed wet blue hides and skins. Pathogenic species of bacteria: Bacillus, Corynebacterium, Stenotrophomonas and fungi: Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Paecilomyces, Candida, Cryptococcus were identified in tested media. The microbial condition in the tested plants suggests the possible negative effect of microorganisms on processed materials and leather products. The occurrence of pathogenic microorganisms does not exclude the risk to the health of tannery workers.
