The essay presents the research on the impact of chromium compounds on the effectiveness of biological treatment of effluents by activated sludge, the structure of activated sludge, the composition of microfauna and sedimentation characteristics of activated sludge. The determinations of the indexes of pollution of wastewater have been carried out according to Polish standards, with the exception of COD Cr of biologically treated effluents containing hexivalent chromium. For such effluents a modified method for marking COD Cr has been developed, eliminating the impact of hexivalent chromium added to effluents. In the research it has been established that oxygen indicators were not a reliable criterion for the assessment of the impact of chromium compounds on activated sludge. The microscopic structure research and microfauna composition examination of the activated sludge proved necessary.

The preservation is the best method to prevent fresh hides against the structural destruction. It may be done by chemical methods, economic and application. The agents common used in hides preservation is natrium chloride, the best way as a salt. All others agents only supporting its activity, also against halophilic bacteria. Using them alone, as single agent may be effective only in short term preservation. The especially interested among discussed agents were BIT and Mortanol 30 because of their degradation without toxically metabolite producing. The hides preservation techniques are showed. The effective applying of preservation agents can be reach by dynamic preservation technique.

The preservation of hides is the main source of chlorides in the tannery waste water. To reduce the amount of salt different methods are proposed, without natrium chloride or with the reduction of its contain. The bacterial changes observed on hides after killing are showed. The physical methods of preservation such as cooling with different cooling agents or radiation preservation are described.
