The article presents the results of the survey on the consequences of the liquidation of passenger railway connections on rural areas of North Eastern Mazowsze. The localities in question are lined along two inoperative railway lines: from Ostrołęka to Śniadowo and from Ostrołęka to Małkinia. In the first part of the article social-economic background of the area is given and further the test which was carried out is described. In 150 interviews which were carried out in 37 villages, information about 753 inhabitants was collected. In further part of the article the main aims and the directions of the migration of the village population and difficulties connected with everyday commuting after liquidation of the railway connection were described . The majority of home farms adapted themselves to the new situation, mainly by the purchase of the car (88% farms own vehicle) and by organization of the rides individually. Presently the bus transport reaches only 46% of studied villages . The number of buses' runs (not enough) and their timing (not within the most required time) make the use of public transport by local community nearly impossible. The opinion of the majority of the questioned inhabitants clearly demonstrates that the accessibility of public transport after the liquidation of the railway connection deteriorated (80% of the answers). Children and youth are the groups of the population which feel the lack of the railway connection the most painfully as well as the elderly and lonely people, who do not have a driving license or their own car.
