Based on a case study performed in industry, this work deals with a statistical analysis of data collected during usability testing. The data is from tests performed by usability testers from two companies in two different countries. One problem in the industrial situation is the scarcity of testing resources, and a need to use these resources in the most efficient way. Therefore, the data from the testing is analysed to see whether it is possible to measure usability on the basis of one single metric, and whether it is possible to judge usability problems on the basis of the distribution of use case completion times. This would allow test leaders to concentrate on situations where there are obvious problems. We find that it is not possible to measure usability through the use of one metric, but that it may be possible to gain indications of usability problems on the basis of an analysis of time taken to perform use cases. This knowledge would allow the collection of usability data from distributed user groups, and a more efficient use of scarce testing resources.

This paper deals with a case study of testing with a usability testing package (UTUM), which is also a tool for quality assurance, developed in cooperation between industry and research. It shows that within the studied company, there is a need to balance agility and formalism when producing and presenting results of usability testing to groups who we have called Designers and Product Owners. We have found that these groups have different needs, which can be placed on opposite sides of a scale, based on the agile manifesto. This becomes a Designer and a Product Owner Manifesto. The test package is seen as a successful hybrid method combining agility with formalism, satisfying organisational needs, and fulfilling the desire to create a closer relation between industry and research.

As we, together with a group of Polish hydrotechnicians, had the occasion to visit the Three Gorges Darn on the Yangtze River at the time it was under construction, we would like to share the information we got, as well as personal observations.

In summary an attempt to answer the question is presented, like: what is the inland navigation in Poland? Przedstawiono wyniki badań warunków zachowania stabilności przekroju poprzecznego drogi wodnej z uwzględnieniem ruchu jednostek pływających. Zwrócono uwagę, że na trwałość koryta szlaku żeglownego szczególny wpływ mają prąd powrotny oraz prędkość wody wywołana pracą pędników (strumień zaśrubowy). Omówiono sposoby wyznaczania obydwu czynników oraz na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań przedstawiono uwarunkowania wpływające na ich wielkość.

There have been presented results of investigation into conditions for preservation of stability of cross-section of the waterway taking into consideration the traffic of water craft. Attention has been paid to the fact that strong influence on stability of the waterway bed is exerted by return current and water velocity being produced by propeller (screw race). There have been also discussed the ways for determination of the mentioned above factors and on the basis of carried out investigation have been presented conditions influencing their values.

It presents also agents influencing its value as well as the conventional ways of determination of the velocity based on many years' investigations carried out in natural conditions and on models. The paper discusses the problem of resistance to motion of vessels navigating on inland water-ways. There have been also presented methods for determination of resistance based on many years' investigations carried out in natural conditions and on models, as well as factors influencing its values. Particular attention has been paid to the significant effect of dimensions of the cross-section of the water--way (its breadth and depth) and of the horizontal configuration of the water-way (nawigation along the river bend).

On 12 July in Polish Parliament took place the first reading of the act on establishment of the multiyear programme ,,The Programme for the Oder 2006". The paper presents the origin of the creation of that act and discusses the main purposes of the document and connected with them tasks. The international cooperation is of crucial importance for creation and implementation of the ,,Programme...". The paper discusses also matters connected with the cost of realization of the Programme including proposals for sources of financing and presents main problems which condition its realization.

Przedstawiono możliwości oceny bezpiecznego śluzowania statków w śluzach komorowych. Omówiono siły działające na statkach podczas śluzowania oraz możliwości ich wyznaczania. Zaprezentowano wyniki licznych badań wykonanych przez autorów na modelach i w naturze stwierdzając, że ocena bezpiecznego śluzowania statków na podstawie określenia sił podłużnych, pomiaru pochylenia statku (barek w zestawie) lub pochylenia zwierciadła wody w komorze może być z powodzeniem stosowana w śluzach napełnianych od czoła.

Przedstawiono nową formułę pozwalającą określać szerokość pasa ruchu statku na łuku środkowej drogi wodnej opracowaną na podstawie badań w naturze i na modelu. Wykazano, ze zaproponowana formuła, uwzględniająca pod-stawowe gabaryty statku oraz jego kąt dryfu i geometrię łuku, przydatna jest do stosowania w projektowaniu dróg wodnych.

A new formula which affords possibility for determination of the width of the vessel traffic lane on curve of the inland water- way has been presented. It has been proved that the proposed formula which includes in reckogning the basic overall dimensions of the vessel, its drift angle as well as the geometry of the curve can be useful for planning of waterways.
