The importance of winter catch crops compared with other farmland habitats to birds wintering in Poland

The study examined the importance of winter catch crops (intercrops) to wintering birds in a low-intensity farming area of Poland. Birds were counted on two occasions between November 2009 and January 2010 in 514 research plots in two different parts of the country. During the two counts 28 species were recorded. Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra, Tree Sparrow Passer montanus and Shorelark Eremophila alpestris were the most numerous species. The statistical analysis (GLZ) of the influence of survey, location and habitat types on the occurrence of birds in the farmland did not reflect the significant effect on any variables. Significant differences in densities of birds between the habitats analysed (GLM) were noted. The stubbles supported a relatively greater density of birds than the mustard winter catch crop and ploughed fields. Increasing the area of winter catch crops at the expense of ploughed fields may favour birds, but when winter crops are sown in fields that would otherwise be left as stubble, wintering conditions for birds deteriorate, especially for buntings.

Zachowanie wysokotemperaturowej wytrzymałości przez elementy kotłów czy rurociągów w perspektywie długiego czasu eksploatacji ogranicza szereg czynników, w tym zjawisko pełzania. Ponieważ zdecydowana większość bloków energetycznych w Polsce przekroczyła ponad dwukrotnie czas obliczeniowy, należy spodziewać się, że zjawisko pełzania będzie pojawiać się na coraz większej liczbie elementów urządzeń energetycznych. Regularne wykonywanie badań diagnostycznych wpływa znacząco na bezpieczeństwo pracy rurociągów parowych, ponieważ umożliwia wyeliminowanie elementów, którym grozi uszkodzenie (rozszczelnienie) podczas pracy. W artykule dokonano analizy stanu materiału wyciętego z eksploatowanej instalacji kolana rurociągu pary pierwotnej po przepracowaniu około 260 tysięcy godzin, dla którego w ramach okresowych badań wykryto zmiany dekohezyjne. Podjęte działania już na etapie badań nieniszczących na obiekcie pozwoliły na wczesnym etapie zdiagnozować zagrażający mieniu i życiu stan materiału kolana rurociągu i na bezpieczną jego wymianę. Późniejsze badania niszczące materiału kolana potwierdziły słuszność tej decyzji, gdyż dalsza eksploatacja tego fragmentu rurociągu mogłaby doprowadzić nawet do rozszczelnienia rurociągu.

Holding the high-temperature strength by boiler or pipeline elements in the perspective of a long-time operation is limited by many factors, including creep. As the vast majority of power units in Poland have exceeded the calculated operating-life almost twicely we can expect that this phenomenon will concern the bigger and bigger amount of power equipment elements. Regular carrying out of the diagnostic tests will significantly influence steam pipelines working safety by eliminating the elements endangered by a damage (leak) during work. Analysis has been made of a material cut out from the elbow of a primary steam installation being in operation for about 260 thousand hours where, during periodic testing, decohesive changes were detected. Activities, taken up already at the stage of non-destructive tests, enabled at first to diagnose the dangerous for life and property condition of the pipeline elbow material and then its safe replacement. The later on conducted destructive tests confirmed appropriateness of this decision, as further operation of this pipeline fragment could even lead to the loss of tightness.

Przeprowadzono próby napawania laserowego krążków ze stali narzędziowej do pracy na gorąco X37CrMoV5-1 z jednoczesnym podawaniem drutu litego ze stali austenitycznej CastoMag 45500 i proszku ceramicznego MetaCeram 28060 do jeziorka spawalniczego napoiny. Określono wpływ podstawowych parametrów napawania: mocy wiązki laserowej, prędkości napawania, prędkości podawania drutu oraz natężenia podawania proszku na jakość, kształt, oraz wymiary geometryczne napoin.

Results of the study of the technology of laser surfacing of X37CrMoV5-1 hot work tool steel during simultaneous feeding of solid wire CastoMag 45500 and powder MetaCeram 28060 into the weld pool are presented. Results of the surfacing parameters on quality and geometry are given.

Deos the Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio L.) benefit from nesting in the association with the Barred Warbler (Sylvia nisoria Bechst.)?

The co-occurrence of Redbacked Shrikes (Lanius collurio) and Barred Warblers (Sylvia nisoria) was monitored during the years 1999-2003 at 343 ha of agricultural landscape of eastern Poland. Each year 25-31 pairs of Red-backed Shrikes and 3-8 pairs of Barred Warblers were nesting. In total, during five seasons, shrikes were nesting in the vicinity (within 50 m from the centre of the Barred Warbler territory) of 22 out of 24 (92%) warbler territories. The breeding success of the pairs nesting close to Barred Warbler territories was 89%, as compared with 61% for the remaining pairs and it was statistically significant. No difference was found in the clutch size between Redbacked Shrikes nesting close to Barred Warblers and far from them, but statistically significant difference was found in numbers of fledglings between them. The present results imply that close nesting of these two species reduces the risk of nest predation. This may be due to the aggression of Barrred Warblers towards potential predators, as this species actively attacks predators near the nest.
