In the paper we present selected outcomes of a research into possible acceptance of inquiry based mathematics education as a method used by primary school teachers. We suggest some objective as well as subjective reasons for explaining its so far low level of usage and aim at identifying obstacles, which prevent the enquiry based techniques in the primary school educational environment.

In the contribution we present a specimen of outcomes obtained from a pilot research conducted during a project aimed at verification of the new Czech curriculum for pupils with special educational needs. We include tasks falling into the area of mathematical literacy, which enable us to characterize pupils' competences.

In the contribution the results of the same set of mathematics tasks given to two different pedagogy students groups are compared. It deals with comparison of these two examinations' results. The first group of students was represented by applicants for mathematics pedagogy studies, and the test was applied as an entrance exam in 1985 and 2001. The second group was represented by students of the same field of study at the beginning of their studies in 2010. These students did not sit for an entrance exam because of low number of applicants at that time. The comparison shows a significant decline of current students' competences which are necessary for solving mathematical tasks.

The aim of the paper is to present some of the results of an analysis of educational needs which was carried out among students of the Primary school teacher training study programme at Palacký University Olomouc and which was focused on the mathematical and didactical competencies of those students.

The magnetic field produced by alternating currents flowing in the bus-bars of switchgears induces eddy currents in the metal parts nearby. The metal enclosure around these bars is also exposed to this magnetic field, therefore currents, namely power losses within it are ineluctable. Depending on the material and the switchgear's geometry, the non-uniform current density-, hence the power loss distribution and the total loss can be different in the different phase conductors and in the enclosure. As the analytical modeling of a complex geometry is practically impossible, another approach should be adopted to determine these parameters. This can be the finite element (FE) calculation method. The results of such calculations on the 2D models of one high voltage and one medium voltage GIS are presented in this paper.

The contribution reports on an untraditional presentation of mathematical activities for elementary school pupils, which are being prepared as a part of grant focused on developing pupils” interest in mathematics and change of their attitude to mathematics as a school subject. Solving non-standard tasks, competitions, games and manipulative activities provide pupils, teachers and parents with a chance to change their perception of school mathematics.
