International student workshops as an important element in architectural education

Workshops as one of the paths in the process of architectural education seem to constitute an important element in the development of competence and skills, mostly of students, but they can also considerably enrich the didactic and scientific competence of people who assume the role of teachers. This pertains especially to students of Ph.D. courses, who, as teaching assistants, are standing at the threshold of their teaching careers. Due to the fact that workshops have a different character than the formula of course projects, on the one hand, they are a diversion in the regular courses, and on the other, they enrich them to a considerable extent, especially if they are international.

Warsztaty, jako jedna ze ścieżek w procesie edukacji architektonicznej, mogą stanowić istotny element rozwoju kompetencji i umiejętności studentów, ale także mogą wzbogacić warsztat pracy dydaktycznej i naukowej osób, które występują w roli prowadzącego. Dotyczy to szczególnie słuchaczy studiów doktoranckich, którzy jako asystenci stoją u progu swojej kariery dydaktycznej. Warsztaty studenckie, ze względu na swoją odmienną formę w stosunku do formuły projektów kursowych, stanowią niejako ich uzupełnienie. Z jednej strony są odskocznią od regularnego trybu studiów, a z drugiej w znaczący sposób mogą go wzbogacić, szczególnie jeśli ich charakter jest międzynarodowy.

Ulegające degradacji części obszarów miejskich nie pozostają bez znaczenia dla miasta jako całości. Wielkopłytowe osiedla mieszkaniowe najczęściej do takich należą. W Niemczech problem z nimi związany rozpoczął się wraz z masowym odpływem ich mieszkańców po zjednoczeniu kraju. Reakcja państwa była natychmiastowa. Od lat 90. trwa proces wielokierunkowej rewitalizacji tych osiedli. Dobrym przykładem jest tu Hellersdorf w Berlinie – osiedle poddane kompleksowym działaniom, mającym na celu podniesienie jego walorów architektonicznych i urbanistycznych, w tym wytworzenie wartościowej przestrzeni publicznej. Polskie osiedla wielkopłytowe obecnie stoją wobec konieczności podjęcia działań rewitalizacyjnych, ulegają bowiem postępującemu procesowi degradacji, czego negatywne skutki odczuwalne są już teraz. Bez zahamowania tego procesu mogą być one w przyszłości trudne, czy wręcz niemożliwe, do usunięcia. Wielkopłytowe osiedla wielorodzinne stanowią znaczny procent w strukturze polskich miast – dlatego skuteczne podnoszenie ich standardu funkcjonalno-przestrzennego będzie miało istotny wpływ na poprawę jakości przestrzeni miasta – miasta przyszłości.

Degraded parts of the city are not indifferent to the city as a whole. Many large panel housing estates belong to this kind of areas. In Germany their problematic issues appeared after the country reunited, when they started to suffer a massive outflow of their inhabitants. The reactions of the state authorities was instantaneous: the process of multidirectional revitalization of the large panel housing estates was launched in 90s and continues to this day. In this paper Hellersdorf housing estate in Berlin is presented as a good example of an estate subjected to the comprehensive measures aimed at improving its architectural and urban qualities, including creation of valuable public spaces. As Polish large panel housing estates are undergoing a process of degradation, negative effects of which are visible nowadays, they need to be revitalized. Without stopping the degradation, it may be hard or even impossible to remove these negative effects in the future. Large panel housing estates constitute a significant percentage of housing stock in Poland. Thus, effective improvement of their spatial and functional standards will have a positive impact on the quality of the city space – the city of the future.

Po zjednoczeniu Niemiec w 1989 r. wielkopłytowe osiedla mieszkaniowe byłego Berlina Wschodniego zaczęły masowo pustoszeć. Związane to było w dużej mierze z migracją ludności do zachodniej części miasta. Na przykładzie osiedla Marzahn ukazano, w jaki sposób przemyślana, konsekwentnie stosowana i centralnie stymulowana rewitalizacja takich osiedli odwróciła ten proces.

Large panel housing estates in former West Berlin have suffered from notable abandonment after Germany reunited in 1989. It was a migration of the population to the western part of the city, which was a significant reason for this situation. This article is to present how this process was turned around by a well-thought-out, consistently applied and centrally stimulated revitalization process.

Witruwiusz twierdził, iż istotna jest trwałość obiektu architektonicznego - FIRMITAS. Można rozumieć to także jako trwałość w zachowaniu ciągłości historycznej. W przypadku dublińskich Docklands została ona zachowana. W jej imię zmieniono UTILITAS - użyteczność. Obecnie nie ma już tam kutrów ani rybaków, są natomiast mariny, tereny rekreacyjne, domy mieszkalne. W ten sposób trzeci z witruwiuszowskich elementów - VENUSTAS - piękno - nie jest jedynie pustą formą; by zachować firmitas zmodyfikowano utilitas jednocześnie wysuwając venustas na plan pierwszy.

Vitruvius claimed that durability (FIRMITAS) is an essential factor of an architectural object. The idea of durability though may be also understood as historical continuity. In the case of Dublin's Docklands it has been retained. In order to preserve FIRMITAS, UTILITAS was changed. One would not be able to find a single cutter or fisherman in the area. Nowadays, the place is fulfilled with marinas, recreation areas and apartments. In this way the third's of Vitruvius' triad -VENUSTAS - is not only an empty form. This is because while preserving firmitas, the utilitas has been modified. Moreover, the venustas became the "primus inter pares" in the Vitruvius' triad.
