Przedstawiono ogólny kontekst związany z rozwojem aplikacji Internetu przyszłości. Punktem wyjścia do nowego podejścia w zakresie tego zagadnienia są wyzwania, jakie Komisja Europejska stawia przed technologiami ICT w ramach projektów przewodnich powiązanych ze strategią Europa 2020. Poprawa jakości w wielu dziedzinach życia społecznego wiąże się z podjęciem innowacyjnych działań, dla których zasadnicze jest wykorzystanie nowoczesnych technologii informatycznych. W tym nurcie zaprezentowano przykłady opracowanych i zrealizowanych scenariuszy aplikacji w takich domenach, jak zdrowie, edukacja, środowisko naturalne. Omówiono przykładowe technologie, powiązane z głównymi filarami Internetu przyszłości oraz skutki społeczne, jakie mogą one powodować. Wspólną bazą dla rozwoju prezentowanych aplikacji jest globalna e-infrastruktura, w budowie której Polska odgrywa aktywną rolę.

In the paper authors discussed in general the context related to development of Future Internet applications. The new approach in this area arose from challenges put by European Commission in front of Information and Communication Technologies, especially in the scope of Europe 2020 flagship initiatives. Improving quality in many areas of social life is associated with undertaking of innovative activities for which the key is to use modern Information technologies In this trend the paper presents examples of application scenarios which were designed and developed in such domains as health, education, natural environment. Authors discuss examples of technologies associated with the main pillars of the Future Internet and the social consequences they may cause. A common base for the development of presented applications is a global e-infrastructure, building of which Poland plays an active role.

The advent of network innovations in optical networks has a significant influence on computational infrastructures in research projects. Grid applications and middleware, not yet aware of underlying network and its services, have been recently equipped with powerful tools and plug-ins to control and manage not only the computational, but also network infrastructures. However, at this point of time, Grid middleware, even if aware of network services, is not capable of seamless control and management of both, Grid and network resources. The goal of this paper is to introduce a novel approach to dynamic and on-demand management of Grid and network resources in the PHOSPHORUS project.

The purpose of this paper is to present the design of the integration of radio-astronomical VLBI experiments with the Grid environment. The current status of the VLBI process is described, and the main part of this document presents the proposed architecture for the development of the next generation e-VLBI system. This design was created for the purpose of the EXPReS project [12], partially funded by the European Commission (FP6 – IST).

Specialized software, on-line tools and computational resources are very common in contemporary science. One of the exemplary domain is genomics – a new branch of science that developed rapidly in the last decade. As the genome research is very complex, it must be supported by professional informatics. In a microarray field the following steps cannot be performed without computational work: design of probes, quantitative analysis of hybridization results, post-processing, and finally data storage and management. Here, the general aspects of virtual laboratory systems are presented together with perspectives of their implementation in genomics in order to automate and facilitate this area of research.

Over the recent years numerous digital libraries have been deployed and enabled in the Internet with the use of various digital library frameworks. They contain valuable digital resources use of which is important to a large community of users, especially within the scientific and educational communities. The access to distributed digital resources has been a subject of research for a few years now. In this paper we present our own work in this area, discussing our approach at the distributed digital library platform that is widely used within the PIONIER optical network. We present the methodology for building distributed search and access to digital publications that allowed to create a national federation of digital libraries and that is now under investigation for possible use within various application fields including medicine, science and education.

In the paper we present how g-Eclipse can be used for easy running computation on Grid resources. The g-Eclipse project is an EU-founded project that aims to build an integrated workbench framework to access the power of existing Grid infrastructures. The g-Eclipse framework provides a general, integrated workbench toolset for Grid users, operators and developers. It is very useful for inexperienced users to interact with Grid resources independently of the underlying Grid middleware. The Grid abstraction enables Grid users to access the Grid in a desktop-like manner with wizards specified for common use cases.

Dark fibre networks are considered the key element of future research infrastructures. The ownership of fibre leads to the freedom of development, freedom of choice of technology and freedom of design for research networks, as well as virtually unlimited transmission capacity. This concept has been confirmed by the new design of the GÉANT2 [1] network, where majority of links will be based on dark fibre. At the same time, while the GÉANT2 network has been upgraded to a level of technology that allows multiple 10 Gbit/s connections between most of the GÉANT2 partners, many countries of Eastern Europe are still suffering from insufficient connectivity to the Internet. It is expected that a strong role in the development of pan-European research network can be played by so called “Cross Border Fibres” (CBF), owned and operated by NRENs. This paper provides an overview of the PIONIER infrastructure and the Porta Optica initiative, which aims to improve the connectivity of Eastern European NRENs to GÉANT2, using a CBF infrastructure.

W niniejszym artykule opisano założenia projektu Wielkopolskiej Biblioteki Cyfrowej (WBC) oraz wykorzystane do niego oprogramowanie dLibra. Omówiono krótko ogólną funkcjonalność bibliotek cyfrowych, a następnie przedstawiono wymagania stawiane bibliotekom regionalnym: wsparcie dla wystaw tematycznych, rozbudowane wersjonowanie i zarządzanie dostępem, wsparcie dla dokładnych wyników wyszukiwania, współpraca z systemami bibliotecznymi. W podsumowaniu omówiono dalsze kierunki rozwoju projektu oraz oprogramowania.

Content available remote Provision of databases in the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center

The article presents a concise report on the experience gained in the last three years in the scope of network provision of bibliographic databases by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and full-text humanities and medical databases by EBSCO Publishing. The authors emphasise the importance and impact of the programme and the databases, co-financed by the State Committee for Scientific Research, on the initiation and continuation of organisational activities and efficient database access management. The paper contains a short review of the information resources presently available, including the titles of bibliographic and full-text databases, the scope of licences, subscription periods, and the volumes of archival resources. It provides statistics illustrating the distribution and extent of the bibliographic database usage by the scientific community, including, active institutional and individual, users and discusses the hardware and software used to provide the network database access services, the availability conditions, as well as the rules of license renewal and co-financing by the interested institutions. The report also deals with the access conditions and abilities to the electronic versions of humanities, economics and medical databases offered by EBSCO Publishing. It is vital to show the structure of the service, the scope of subjects available in the databases, title estimation and the access to html, as well as image source types. Moreover, the report focuses on the modes of access to single database and to several of them simultaneously, as well as on multi-aspect searching with the use of the author and subject indexes and keywords.

Koncepcja zintegrowanego rozwoju zaawansowanych technologii, usług i aplikacji sieciowych dla społeczeństwa informacyjnego w Polsce, przygotowana przez polskie środowisko naukowe, zawarta jest w programie Pionier - Polski Internet Optyczny, przyjętym przez Komitet Badań Naukowych do realizacji w latach 2001-2005. Głównym paradygmatem rozwoju technologii sieciowych jest nowy Internet, badany nośnikiem całkowicie nowych usług, zastępującym równocześnie tradycyjne usługi telekomunikacyjne. Autorzy przedstawili w pracy parametry charakteryzujące szybkość transmisji oraz możliwości realizacyjne usług świadczonych przez sieci kręgosłupowe i dostępowe. Dalej Autorzy scharakteryzowali program budowy narzędzi wspólnych i specjalizowanych dla wybranych, pilotowych aplikacji z takich zakresów jak: nauki obliczeniowe, zdalne nauczanie, informacja przestrzenna, zarządzanie zasobami środowiska, telemedycyna, praca grupowa. Bardziej szczegółowo przedstawiono kierunki rozwoju aplikacji dotyczących aplikacji geograficznej (przestrzennej). Jak uogólnieniem, według autorów, może być grid geograficzny (GI Grid), czyli krajowa sieć GI, złożona z kilku warstw: podstawowej (infrastruktura komunikacyjna), oprogramowania i aplikacyjnej. Ostatni rozdział pracy zawiera charakterystykę tej koncepcji.

Concept of integrated development of the advanced technologies, services and network applications for information society in Poland, prepared by Polish scientific community, is presented in the program Pionier - Polish Optical Internet, accepted by the State Committee for Scientific Research for implementation in the period 2001 -2005. New Internet, being the carrier of completely new services, which will replace traditional telecommunication services, is the main paradigm of development of network technologies. Authors presented parameters characterizing speed of transmission and range of services available in backbone and access networks. Authors further characterized program of creating common and specialized tools for the selected, pilot applications in computation sciences, remote learning, spatial information, management of environmental resources, telemedicine and group work. Trends of development of geographic (spatial) application were discussed in greater detail. In author's opinion geographic grid (G1 Grid), i.e. national GI network, composed from several layers: basic layer (communication infrastructure), software and application layer, can be the general form of spatial application. The last chapter of the work includes characteristics of this concept.
