Investigation of the microstructure, topography and properties of the as received Ti-6Al-4V alloy as well as nitrided under glow discharge was performed. The microstructural analyses were carried out using LM, XRD, SEM and analytical TEM. Phase identification and chemical composition of the layer and bulk material were determined by electron diffraction and by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Atomic force microscopy was applied for layer surface topography measurements. Microhardness and Young's modulus measurements together with frictional wear resistance and corrosion resistance tests were performed. The investigation revealed a clear correlation between micro/nanostructure and surface topography of nitrided multilayer with its micro-mechanical, tribological and corrosion properties.

Testing Si3N4 membrane windows is a preliminary research for the single-ion-single-cell irradiating programme prepared at the Cracow nuclear microprobe facility. The present investigation is concerned with finding a method to register every single particle of the microprobe beam when passing through a membrane to the atmosphere. The 200 nm thick membranes covered with different layers were investigated. The alpha particles, after passing the membrane window, were registered by a particle detector. Secondary electrons ejected from the membrane by alpha particles were registered by a channeltron. The channeltron signals were collected in coincidence with the silicon detector signals. The detection efficiency is the ratio of the fast coincident channeltron signal number to the total number of the silicon detector signals. The results of investigation of the membranes with different coverages are reported in the present work.

We estimated release of cytokines IL-6 and TNFα and tested viability of macrophages cultured with the samples of polyethylene obtained from new acetabular cup of the hip prostheses and from the cups retrieved 4-6 years after implantation. The macrophages cultured with old polyethylene showed decreased viability and released more IL-6 and TNFα.

PL

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was tribologically loaded in a pin-on-disk and in a ring-on-disk tribo-tester under dry and wet conditions. PE wear particles were found to be mainly round with dimensions up to 500 μm. Length and thickness of irregularity shaped debris were within this range of dimensions, too. Wear trace topography and roughness were analyzed by means of a scanning force microscope (SFM). The results are compared with the appearance of UHMWPE debris in tissues resected on revision surgery of the total hip replacement.
