Content available remote Health and environmental applications of gut microbiome: a review
EN
Life on Earth harbours an unimaginable diversity of microbial communities. Among these, gut microbiome, the ecological communities of commensal, symbionts (bacteria and bacteriophages) are a unique assemblage of microbes. This microbial population of animal gut helps in performing organism’s physiological processes to stay healthy and fit. The role of these microbial communities is immense. They continually maintain interrelation with the intestinal mucosa in a subtle equilibrium and help the gut for different functions ranging from metabolism to immunologic functions like upgradation of nutrient-poor diets, aid in digestion of recalcitrant food components, protection from pathogens, contribute to inter- and intra-specific communication, affecting the efficiency as disease vectors etc. The microbial diversity in the gut depends upon environmental competition between microbes, their sieving effects and subsequent elimination. Due to wide diversity of anatomy and physiology of the digestive tracts and food habits, the gut microbiome also differs broadly among animals. Stochastic factors through the history of colonization of the microbiome in a species and in situ evolution are likely to establish interspecies diversity. Moreover, the microbes offer enormous opportunity to discover novel species for therapeutic and/or biotechnological applications. In this manuscript, we review the available knowledge on gut microbiome, emphasising their role in health and health related applications in human.

This paper presents a multi-objective extended optimization methodology applied in the machining of a randomly oriented GFRP rod. Design of Experiment (DOE) has been selected based on a L9 orthogonal array design with varying process control parameters like: spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. Multiple surface roughness parameters of the machined FRP product along with the Material Removal Rate (MRR) of the machining process have been optimized simultaneously. The Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) has been proposed for providing feasible means for the meaningful aggregation of multiple objective unctions into an equivalent single performance index (MPCI). This Multi-Performance Characteristic Index (MPCI) has been optimized using the Taguchi method. The approach adapted here is capable of overcoming limitations/assumptions of existing optimization methodologies available in the literature.

In today´s competitive global markets, selection of a potential supplier plays an important role to cut production costs as well as material costs of the company. This leads to successful survival and sustainability in a competitive marketplace. Therefore, evaluation and selection of an appropriate supplier has become an important part of supply chain management. The nature of the supplier selection process is a complex multi-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) problem which deals with both quantitative and qualitative factors may be conflicting in nature as well as contain incomplete and uncertain information. In order to solve such a kind of MAGDM problems, the development of an effective supplier selection model is evidently desirable. In this paper, an application of the VIKOR method combined with fuzzy logic has been used to solve supplier selection problems with conflicting and non-commensurable (different units) criteria, assuming that compromising is acceptable for conflict resolution. The decision maker wants a solution, which must be closest to the ideal, and the alternatives are evaluated according to all established criteria. Linguistic values are used to assess the ratings and weights for the conflicting factors. These linguistic ratings can be expressed in triangular fuzzy numbers. Then, a hierarchy MAGDM model based on fuzzy sets theory and the VIKOR method has been proposed to deal with the supplier selection problems in the supply chain system. A case study has been illustrated as an application of the proposed model.

Molecules that may adopt various stable conformations might be applied to store information. We have investigated arrangement of complex fullerene organometallic cycloadducts deposited on HOPG (Highly Oriented Pyrolitic Graphite) substrate using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) seeking ehether their structure could be determined. These complexes are easily distinguishable on HOPG by the molecules of high density of states of C60 and the adducted group. Various types of arrangement of the molecules were identified and tunneling spectroscopic measurements were performed at individual molecules. The images and spectroscopic results are interpreted using semiempirical quantum chemistry calculations.

The incorporation of Pt in aluminide coatings is known to be effective in improving the high temperature thermal stability and the corrosion resistance of superalloys. The effect of Pt on the diffusion of elements in Pt-aluminide coatings on MAR M002 alloys has been studied at 1173, 1273, 1373 K for various annealing times. The generalized Darken model of interdiffusion has been used in this work. The model is based on the postulate that the total mass flow is a sum of the diffusion and the drift fluxes. It is applied for the case of diffusional transport in the multicomponent beta-NiAl(Pt)MAR M002 system. The proper boundary conditions allow to study interdiffusion in multicomponent alloys, complex coatings and in open systems e.g., the evolution of the alloy composition due to oxidation (concentration profiles in - NiAl(Pt) beneth a growing alumina scale. The relaxed initial conditions also allow to study interdiffusion in non-regular initial conditions.
