W ostatnich latach coraz częściej w działaniach związanych z wdrażaniem Konwencji o różnorodności biologicznej pojawia się pojęcie usług ekosystemowych. Różnorodność biologiczna powinna być zachowywana nie tylko ze względu na jej wewnętrzne wartości, ale również ze względu na to, że dzięki niej trwa dostarczanie szeregu usług ekosystemowych, mających wpływ na rozwój społeczno-gospodarczy i warunki życia człowieka na Ziemi.

Ecosystem services are the benefits people derive from ecosystems. The term „ecosystem services” does not appear in the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity but there is reference made to it in many articles. That term appears in many decisions of the CBD Conference of the Parties. Majority of the decisions in which this term is used concerns thematic work programs of the Convention. Other decisions concern theecosystem approach, Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, Millennium Ecosystem Assessment outcomes,economic incentive measures, implementation of the Convention Strategic Plan, financial resources, brodiversrity and climate change. The term „ecosystem services” is also used in many draft decisions to be made in 2010.
