The second phase of the Energiewende will fully integrate renewable energy sources and adapt the power generation base to fuel production and use of renewable fuels based on H2, which will enable the sector coupling. The energy mix for the 2050s is clear: wind, solar, biomass and water will be the primary sources of energy, with hydrogen power plants serving as backup and supply – the latter in times of windless and cloudy skies. Will this admittedly rather futuristic vision become reality? The new government in Germany, in its coalition agreement, has fully committed itself to this goal and has made the Energiewende a priority task for the coming term and the following decades. These goals were reaffirmed in the so-called "Easter Package." This article refers to an earlier paper in 2016 and discusses some of the technical aspects of the second phase of the Energiewende from the perspective of the authors’ experience.
