The paper presents a problem of accurrences of aircraft inefficiencies as a probabilistic phenomenon. An example of ambiguity of terminology applied to analysis of inefficiencies in the world's aviation has been given. A suggestion of some new approach to the phenomenon of inefficiencies has been made as well. A new definition od a failure state has been suggested. Two methods of analysing failure states of aircraft have been discussed. The first one is applicable to an object in operation, hence its name - Method of Object in Operation. The second one is applicable to an object under design, hence its name - Method of Object Under Design.

The intended aim of the paper is to present a diagnistic system of a modern aircraft and its components, including an airborne integrated diagnostic system that utilises the integrated diagnistic model. The B-767 and A-340 are the examples of applications of such a system. What has been emphasised is the significance of airborne on-line diagnistics based on simulating - among other things-flight dynamics, with a computer-based model of flight dynamic engaged. The effects of some selected model's components upon the quality and accuracy of results gained in course of the computer-assisted long-term simulation of flight dynamics have been shown. Attention has been drown to the problem of identification of aerodynamic characteristics of the mathematical model of flight dynamics on the grounds of flight tests. The problem can be solved with influence of stochastic phenomena taken into account. The complex systems theory that takes account of these phenomena as well as methods of stochastic identification serves as the researcher's tool. In the case of linear systems the problem has been theoretically solved.
