Since September 11, 2001 the whole world have focused on Afghanistan. The man who challenged the United States, Osama bin Laden, and the initiator of terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon lives in hiding in this country. The problem of terrorism in the contemporary world is analysed in many press, radio and TV commentaries. This article, taking this very important problem into account, pays attention to the roots of today's threat. It is not accidental that Afghanistan was chosen the main seat of Al Qaeda. Today's events in Afghanistan are closely connected with the political crisis that took place during the Cold War between the USA and the USSR. Afghanistan is part of the Middle East.

The collapse of the Eastern Block and the end of the Cold War finished a certain epoch that involved a great tension in international relations. This tension posed a threat of a serious armed conflict between the current superpowers, i.e. USA and USSR. US-led coalition retained its unity, whereas the Russian - Chinese block collapsed that resulted in the growth of the USA power and significance in the world. Some politics theoreticians, following in Francis Fukuyama’s footsteps, recognised it as the end of history. They may have suspected that successive years in the world's history will be the time of welfare and indisputable leadership of the United States.
