The paper presents the results of petrographic analyses of the sediments underlying the phytogenic succession of the Wielkie Torfowisko Batorowskie Mire in the Table Mountains in the Sudetes, compared with the results of petrographic studies of Cretaceous rocks adjacent to the mire. The aim of the research was to determine the factors responsible for the mire location. Research has shown that prior to the formation of the peat ecosystem, in the morphological depression occupied by the mire, material originating from the weathering of all rocks occurring in the vicinity of the mire and in its bedrock was deposited. The location of the peat bog has lithological and structural constraints, as the main role in the development of the morphological depression and the development of the peat ecosystem was played by the inclination of poorly permeable sandstone layers occurring in the base of the heterolithic series.
