A sea voyage can be divided into three parts with varying degrees of risk: • from the berth at the port of departure to the pilot disembarkation point • from the pilot disembarkation to another pilot embarkation point near the port of call/destination • from the pilot embarkation point to the berth Results of statistical research into ship accidents at sea point to an increased number of incidents and accidents, including groundings, especially in restricted areas. Such areas are often narrow and have limited depths, while their short straight sections require frequent course alterations, often in varying hydrometeorological conditions. Due to all these factors, the voyage has to be carefully planned and all watchkeeping officers have to be well prepared to conduct the ship safely. The article presents the objectives, scope, legal basis and stages in the process of voyage planning. The compliance with the outlined principles will reduce the level of risk in maritime transport.

Do Pracowni Konserwacji Zabytków Metalowych Instytutu Archeologii Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego przekazywane są do konserwacji oraz analiz różnorodne zabytki odnalezione podczas badań archeologicznych. Jednym z takich zabytków był przedmiot pochodzący z wczesnośredniowiecznego cmentarzyska w Lubieniu określony jako okładzina pochewki noża. Po dogłębnej analizie oraz różnorodnych badaniach okazało się, że był to zupełnie inny przedmiot niż pierwotnie przypuszczano, a mianowicie rzadko spotykane we wczesnym Średniowieczu na ziemiach polskich krzesiwko ażurowe. Wśród produktów korozji znajdował się również srebrny denar krzyżowy z 4. ćwierci XI w. Okazuje się, że podczas wnikliwej obserwacji oraz interwencji konserwatorskiej zmienia się także dotychczasowy stan badań oraz pozyskuje się nową wiedzę na temat depozytów grobowych.

The Laboratory of Conservation of Metal Objects at the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Łódź receives various relics discovered during archaeological excavations for conservation and analysis. One of such items was an object found in an early-medieval cemetery in Lubień, and described as covering of a knife scabbard. After a thorough analysis and various tests, it turned out that it was an entirely different object than had been originally assumed, namely an openwork strike-a-light rarely encountered in Polish territories during the Early Medieval period. Among corrosion products there was a silver cross denarius from the 4th quarter of the 11th c. It appears that in the process of careful observation and conservation intervention the current state of research can change as well and new knowledge can be acquired concerning burial deposits.

The European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus, 1758), enters the Baltic Sea only occasionally. Little is known about the parasites that inhabit this fish in the northern part of its natural range (north-eastern Atlantic). This study is based on 32 anchovies sampled in autumn 2006 from a substantial bycatch accompanying sprat in the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). The fish were examined using standard parasitological procedures, and yielded 10 L3 larvae of the nematode Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802). The prevalence and the intensity (mean and range) were 21.9%, 1.4, and 1–4, respectively.

The present paper reports the occurrence of the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis H. Milne Edwards, 1854 in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Gdansk, and attempts an initial characterization of the crabs occurring in this area.
