Conservation of fortifications is among the most important works conducted presently at the Royal Wawel Castle. Fortifications of the Wawel Hill have been rebuilt many times. Most important are the remains of the mediaeval girdle of defence and the outer girdle with elements from the 18th and 19th centuries. Several restoration works were done since 1905. However, some of those works have been never completed and present research has broadened the knowledge. Thus maintenance of the present state is not enough. The aims of conservation can be described by valuing of the elements in the four parts of the fortifications. In the inner girdle of defence most important are gothic elements; in this part alterations from the 19th century are harmful and should be removed. In the western part of the outer girdle most important are tenaille fortifications from the 18th century. In the northern part conservation should respect remodelling executed by A. Szyszko-Bohusz in the 1920's. The eastern and the southern part of the outer girdle contain well-preserved 19th-cent. fortifications and only few earlier elements, so those parts should be kept in the form developed in the 19th century. The author discusses works in course and those planned.
