The history of Wrocław Motorway Bypass (A8 Motorway) stretches back several years ago. However, due to numerous protests of ecologists and the inhabitants of Wrocław themselves, opening it to traffic didn’t take place until 31st August 2011. It runs along a new route on the outskirts of Wrocław, bypassing the city centre from the west and north. The motorway consists of the roadway as well as a great number of engineering structures. The length of the whole motorway is over 35 km and includes 7 interchanges (from the south: Kobierzyce, Południe, Zachód, Lotnisko, Stadion, Północny i Psie Pole). Moreover, along the motorway there are 42 bridge-type structures, including: 11 flyovers running over the motorway, 13 flyovers within the motorway itself, 4 bridges within the motorway itself (including the longest Polish concrete cable-stayed bridge - Rędziński Bridge) or Ekodukt (overpass for large animals) as well as many other structures connected with draining the motorway or environmental protection, noise protection, logistics, safety etc. Wrocław Motorway Bypass plays an important role in improving accessibility to the existing large structures which attract a great number of people (clients, employees) e.g. LG electronicware production plant situated in the Gmina of Kobierzyce, commercial - logistic centre with additional production facilities making up the “Węzeł Bielański”, the Airport in Starachowice, or the newly-built modem football stadium in Maślice. These structures are very well communicated via the Wrocław Motorway Byspass, A4 motorway, and the Inner City Ring Road with the city centre, other regions of Lower Silesia, other parts of the country as well as abroad.
