The observation of a heterogeneous dislocation distribution established in metals and alloys under cyclic-loading conditions indicates a locally varying yield stress. Hence, it seems to be justified to consider even a single-phase material as a composite consisting of elements with different flow stresses. This idea is used in order to describe and predict the cyclic stress-strain behaviour of metalJic materials. The range of applicability of multi-component models with respect to the dislocation slip character and the loading conditions is defined. A statistical mathe-matical treatment leads to equations which allow one to determine the distribution function of yield stresses directly from a single branch of a hysteresis loop. The procedurę of the stress-strain path calculation is illustrated by means of examples and a comparison of calculated and experimentally obtained results is presented.
