Copper and zinc concentrations in soils and grasses near selected communication routes in Wrocław, Poland have been determined. Environmental samples were collected from the surface layer of the soil profile within 3 m from the edge of the road. The analysis of metals in the mineralizates has been carried out by atomic absorptive spectroscopy (AAS). The conductivity and pH of the soil solutions were measured to evaluate the salinity of the soils and also their active and exchangeable acidity. There have been determined the parameters characterizing the content of metals in soils and grasses, the index of the enrichment of soils in zinc and copper (Wn), the bioaccumulation coefficient (WB), histograms of the frequency of metals occurrence in environmental samples. Also it was presented the Pearson’s r correlation coefficients for the relationships: Zn in soil/Cu in soil, Zn in grass/Cu in grass, Cu in grass/Cu in soil, Zn in grass/Zn in soil. The research does not indicate exceeding of the permissible content of copper and zinc in the environment. However, in all samples higher content of the metals compared to the geochemical background have been observed.

Celem badań była ocena toksyczności kompostu wzbogaconego biomasą pofitoreniediacyjną skażoną rtęcią. Eksperyment przeprowadzono w trzech układach: gleba-biomasa bez rtęci (kontrola), gleba-biomasa z rtęcią, gleba-biomasa z rtęcią i zaszczepem mikroorganizmów wyizolowanych ze środowiska opornych na działanie rtęci. Śmiertelność dżdżownic gatunku Eiseniafetida w glebie skażonej rtęcią wykazała, iż dodatek biomasy do stężenia i mgHg/kg s.m. nie wywołuje efektu toksycznego; ponadto nie zauważono śmiertelności dżdżownic w żadnym wykorzystanym podłożu. Na śmiertelność dżdżownic nie miał także wpływu zaszczep mikroorganizmami opornymi na rtęć, które zostały wyizolowane ze środowiska naturalnego.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the toxicity of compost-enriched biomass after phytoremediation contaminated with mercury. The experiment was performed in three schemes: soil-biomass free of mercury (control), soil-biomass with mercury, soil-biomass with mercury inoculated by microorganisms isolated from the environment resistant to mercury. The mortality rate of the Eisenia fetida earthworms in soil contaminated with mercury showed that the addition of biomass to a concentration of l mg Hg/kg DM does not cause toxic effects. The inocula mercury-resistant microorganisms that have been isolated from the environment had no effect on erthworms mortality.

Salvinia natans L. is a known bioaccumulator of metal ions from the aquatic environment. Exposure of plants to prolonged impact of toxins along with a large dose of the metal affects the physiological condition of the plants. The changes occurring in the plants in the phytoremediation process in contaminated medium culture of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg Cu/dm3 show two basic physiological parameters: the assimilation pigment content (chlorophyll a and b) responsible for the production of energy in the process of photosynthesis, and the total protein level as the main constituent of the plant. Conducted studies confirmed a negative effect of high concentrations of copper(II) on Salvinia natans L. plants which in these conditions are capable to bioaccumulate metal from each contaminated culture medium.

Przeprowadzono badania toksyczności biomasy uzyskanej w wyniku procesu fitoremediacji rtęci ze środowiska wodnego w celu możliwości jej wykorzystania w szkółkach leśnych i hodowlach drzewek ozdobnych oraz rekultywacji terenów poprzemysłowych. Dokonano oceny jej wpływu na przebieg procesu kompostowania. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników stwierdzono brak toksyczności badanego kompostu oraz jego wyciągu wodnego na różnych poziomach troficznych.

Biomass from phytoremediation of Hg-polluted water was added to a stable compost (Hg content 1.099 mg/kg dry mass) tested then for toxicity (earthworms Eisenia fetida) and dehydrogenase activity. The aq. exts. of the compost were studied for toxicity (bacteria Vibrio fischeri) and inhibition of food intake by Thamnocephalus platyurus. No toxicity and no effect on dehydrogenase activity were absd. The concn. of Hg in exts. did not exceed 0,001 mg/L, but a full inhibition of food intake by Thamnocephalus platyurus was found.

Capacities of the pleustophytes in the purification of the aquatic environments in Polish climatic zone have been evaluated. Studies of bioaccumulation of copper(II) from culture media contaminated with 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg Cu/dm3 by the plants of Salvinia natans species were performed. The process was carried out for 14 days with the use of artificial plant-breeding species. The balance of the content of copper(II) in dry matter of plants and in the culture media was investigated. Capabilities of Salvinia natans to bioaccumulate copper(II) have been confirmed in all contaminated culture media.

Przedstawiono typowe rodzaje biomasy stosowanej w energetyce zawodowej jak i indywidualnej. Porównano skład chemiczny i właściwości paliw konwencjonalnych z biomasą. Omówiono problemy technologiczne procesów współspalania biomasy z paliwami konwencjonalnymi oraz korzyści i ograniczenia w aspekcie ekologicznym i ekonomicznym.

Presented are typical types of biomass used in commercial power engineering and for personal purposes. Compared is chemical constitution and properties of conventional fuels with the ones of biomass. Discussed are technological problems concerning co-combustion of biomass with conventional fuels as well as its advantages and limitiations in ecological and economic aspects.

There were presented technological and ecological aspects of biogas quality evaluation and introduced an overview of the limits of its selected parameters. There were characterized analytical methods for determining the basic composition of biogas, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, condensation, dust, oils, siloxanes, and aggregated content of sulfur, chlorine and fluorine. The result of comparative analysis and literature studies are proposes of the most adequate to the studies of biogas - analytical methodologies.

Przedstawiono technologiczne i ekologiczne aspekty oceny jakości biogazu oraz zaprezentowano przegląd granicznych wartości jego wybranych parametrów. Scharakteryzowano metody analityczne oznaczania składu podstawowego biogazu, siarkowodoru, amoniaku, kondensatu, pyłów, olejów, siloksanów oraz sumarycznych zawartości związków siarki, chloru i fluoru. Efektem przeprowadzonych analiz porównawczych i badań literaturowych są propozycje metodyk analitycznych najbardziej adekwatnych do badań biogazu.

Local excesses of acceptable concentrations of boron in the aquatic environment may have negative impact on aquatic ecosystems, thus posing potential health hazards to humans and animals. The chemical methods commonly used for the treatment of surface waters may be successfully replaced by phytoremediation processes. Phytoremediation consists in accumulation of the contaminants in biomass, thus bringing the aquatic environment to conditions acceptable from the standpoint of legal regulations. Salvinia natans is an established bioaccumulator of metals from aquatic environments. The goal of this study was to verify the efficacy of the test species (Salvinia natans) in bioaccumulation of boron in Polish climate conditions. The experiment was conducted in waters contaminated with 1, 3, 6 and 8 mg B/dm3 for five days. Boron mass balance and biomass accumulation were evaluated at the final stage of the experiment. Biochemical analysis of the organic matter revealed changes in plants occurring as the result of boron accumulation.
