In this article, we have discussed in detail the effect of Newtonian heating on MHD unsteady free convection boundary layer flow past an oscillating vertical porous plate embedded in a porous medium with thermal radiation, chemical reaction and heat absorption. The governing PDEs of the model together with related initial and boundary conditions have been solved numerically by the finite element method. The dimensionless velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are analyzed graphically due to the effects of key parameters in the concerned model problem. Computed results for the skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are put in tabular form. It is observed that the thermal and mass buoyancy effects support the velocity whilst a reverse effect is noticed when the strength of the magnetic field is increased. The velocity and temperature enhances with an increase in the Newtonian heating and thermal radiation whilst a reverse effect is observed with an increase in the Prandtl number and heat absorption parameter. Increasing Schmidt number and chemical reaction parameter tends to depreciate both velocity and concentration. The Newtonian heating, thermal radiation and magnetic field tends to decrease in the skin friction. The Nusselt number increases with increasing Newtonian heating and heat absorption parameters. An increase in the Schmidt number and chemical reaction rate tends to improve the Sherwood number.

In this paper, the influence of rotation on axisymmetric waves of a piezoelectric rod coated with a thin film is studied using the constitutive equation of linear theory of elasticity and piezoelectricity. Potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion in radial and axial directions. The surface area of the rod is coated by a perfectly conducting material. The frequency equations are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied numerically for PZT-4 ceramics. The computed non-dimensional frequency, phase velocity, relative frequency shift, electromechanical coupling and electric displacement are presented in the form of dispersion curves. This type of study is important in the construction of rotating sensors and gyroscope.

In this paper, the Adomian decomposition method with Padé approximants are integrated to study the boundary layer flow of a conducting fluid past a linearly stretching sheet under the action of a transversely imposed magnetic field. A closed form power series solution based on Adomian polynomials is obtained for the similarity nonlinear ordinary differential equation modelling the problem. In order to satisfy the farfield condition, the Adomian power series is converted to diagonal Padé approximants and evaluated. The results obtained using ADM-Padé are remarkably accurate compared with the numerical results. The proposed technique can be easily employed to solve a wide range of nonlinear boundary value problems.

Content available remote Thermal ignition in a reactive viscous plane-Poiseuille flow: a bifurcation study
EN
Thermal ignition for a reactive viscous flow between two symmetrically heated walls is investigated. The second order nonlinear boundary value problem governing the problem is obtained and solved analytically using a special type of Hermite-Pade approximation technique. We obtained very accurately the critical conditions for thermal ignition together with the two solution branches. It has been observed that an increase in viscous heating due to viscous dissipation can cause a rapid decrease in the magnitude of thermal ignition critical conditions.

Content available remote The biomechanics of atherosclerosis development
EN
In this paper, we investigate the bio-mechanics of atherosclerosis development in human physiology. Blood is modelled as an incompressible fluid of variable viscosity flowing in a slightly diverging channel (i.e. large artery) of small aspect ratio [1]. The hypothetical viewpoint in this work is the existence of relationship between the atherosclerosis development, blood viscosity, flow separation and turning points in the flow field. The problem is tackled by asymptotic approximation and the graphical results are discussed quantitatively.

Content available remote On solution driven flow and heat transfer in a pipe filled with porous media
EN
The axisymmetric flow of a viscous fluid and heat transfer in a pipe filled with porous media driven by suction at the pipe wall is examined. For low suction Reynolds number flow, asymptotic solutions are developed. Using MAPLE, the solution series is extended and a bifurcation study is performed. Our results show that a decrease in the permeability of porous media may reduce the magnitude of heat transfer across the wall. The absence of real solutions of the given type between two turning points is also noticed and this gap of no solution disappears as the permeability of the porous media decreases.
