Polymeric complexes of Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) with Schiff base derived from 4,4-bis-[(salicylaldehyde-5)azo]biphenyl and 1,3-diaminopropane have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, IR, and electronic spectra and magnetic moment data. All these complexes are dark coloured and insoluble in water and most of the common organic solvents. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated the presence of coordinated water in complexes. The solid-state conductivity of the ligand and its polychelates was studied in the temperature range 313–413 K and chelates were found to show semiconducting behaviour. The Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) polychelates have also been assessed for the catalytic epoxidation of styrene.

The Schiff base 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone isonicotinoyl hydrazone (H2L) has been synthesized by condensation of 2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone with isonicotinoyl hydrazide in ethanol. Metal complexes of the Schiff base were prepared from salts of Cr(III), Mn(III), Fe(III), VO(IV), Zr(IV) and UO2(VI). Characterization of the ligand and its metal complexes were carried out by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, 1H NMR, electronic and thermogravimetric analysis in air. The Schiff base behaves as flexidentate ligand and commonly coordinates through the oxygen atom of the deprotonated phenolic group and the nitrogen atom of azomethine group. The thermal data have been analyzed for the kinetic parameters by Broido and Horowitz-Metzger methods. All the compounds were also screened for their antimicrobial activity by agar cup-plate method against various organisms and the results have been compared.

Chelates of Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), VO(IV) and UO2)VI= with Schiff base ligand. The thermogravimetric data have been analyzed for kinetic parameters using Freeman-Carroll and Sharp-Wentworth methods.

New coordination polychelates of manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) with the Schiff base derived from 4,4'-dihydroxydibenzoyl biphenyl and 2,3-butanedionedihydrazone have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, electronic and IR spectra, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analysis and C.D. electrical conductivity. The Schiff base behaves as a dibasic, tetradentate ligand coordinating through an ONNO system and form chelates with general formula of [MLxh2O]n (where x=1 or 2). The thermogravimetric studies indicate a two stage decomposition and the presence of water molecules. Using thermal decomposition data, different kinetic and thermonynamic parameters have also been evaluated. D.C. electrical conductivity was measured over a wide range of temperature over a wide range of temperature in a pellet form. The Schiff base and its polychelates have also been tested for their antimicrobial activities.
