First, we especially focused on Uchida-Kraepelin performance test (hereinafter, referred to as UK-Test) in order to check the ability of non-technical skills of the officers in charge of a navigational watch (hereinafter, referred to as OICNW). UK-Test is one of the psychological test for understanding the personality. In this paper, we considered whether UK-Test is effective methods for OICNW in order to check the ability of non-technical skills using UK-Test results and collision avoidance manoeuvre experiments results on the ship handling simulator (hereinafter, referred to as the simulator). Specifically, we analysed the correlation between UK-Test results and collision avoidance manoeuvre experiments results on the simulator. We also created the collision avoidance scenario that required a lot of the ability of non-technical skills as OICNW, and evaluated the ability of non-technical skills of OICNW.

We initiate studies of patterns in words that appear as subwords (not necessarily factors) of words. A pattern is a string of variables, and we say that a pattern appears in a word if each variable can be morphically mapped to a factor in the word. We define pattern indices and distances between two words relative to a given set of patterns. The distance is defined as the minimal number of ‘pattern reductions’ that transfer one word into another. Motivated by patterns detected in certain scrambled ciliate genomes, we focus on double occurrence words (words where every symbol appears twice) and patterns in those words. Specifically, we show that in double occurrence words the distance relative to patterns αα (repeat words) and ααR (return words) is computable. We also compare some pattern indices of highly scrambled genes in O. trifallax relative to random sequences.

Electromagnetic field waveforms associated with lightning discharges have been the key to understand the spatial distribution of lightning current along the channel. The entire geometry of the lightning channel influences the associated electromagnetic pulse waveform for more than a hundred of microseconds. The electromagnetic model of a lightning channel is employed to investigate the geometry of lightning channels of newly discovered high-current upward lightning discharges, as well as those of ordinary return strokes for comparison.

Multi-hop ad hoc networks are promising candidates for next generation mobile communications. They have sufficient channel capacity to achieve high data rate transmission for large number of users. One advantage of multi-hop networks is to realize multi-route transmissions. Since information bit streams can be transmitted over multiple routes, we can obtain route diversity effect. In order to enhance the route diversity effect, we usually introduce forward error correction schemes. Turbo coding is one of suitable coding methods for multi-hop networks. The turbo encoder generates one message stream and two parity streams whilst the message stream is more important than the parity streams for achieving reliable communications. Thus an unequal power allocation to the message and parity streams could be effective in improving the performance. In this paper, the effect of unequal power allocation for turbo coded multi-hop networks is investigated. Assuming the channel as additive white Gaussian and binary symmetric, we will show considerable performance improvement by unequal power allocation in terms of the bit error rate performance in multi-route multi-hop networks.
