The spirit of the place, the caring spirit, the genius loci, the driving force, is the search for the essence of the place, the reason why the city, the town was founded and continues for the next years. But this is also a question about the future. What should a place look like and function now and in the future? What could be the role of the heritage of previous generations in the current development processes?

Duch miejsca, duch opiekuńczy, genius loci, duch sprawczy, to poszukiwanie istoty miejsca, powodu dla którego miasto, miasteczko powstało i trwa przez kolejne lata. Ale to także pytanie o przyszłość. Jak powinno wyglądać i funkcjonować miejsce obecnie i w przyszłości? Jaka może być rola dziedzictwa poprzednich pokoleń w aktualnych procesach rozwojowych?

W trakcie opracowywania gminnych dokumentów planistycznych miasta Łodzi zauważono potrzebę objęcia ochroną zachowanych i czytelnych układów ruralistycznych, znajdujących się obecnie na jego terenie. Badania naukowe oparto na kwerendzie i analizie archiwalnych materiałów kartograficznych, analizie porównawczej map archiwalnych oraz współczesnych, wraz z wykorzystaniem nowoczesnych narzędzi cyfrowych, a także na wizjach terenowych. Wyniki badań naukowych ukazały bogaty obraz reliktów osadnictwa wiejskiego w granicach „Wielkiej Łodzi”, ale i wielkie zaniedbania konserwatorsko-planistyczne w zakresie ochrony tych elementów. W obecnie opracowywanym dokumencie planistycznym uzupełniono ochronę konserwatorską i krajobrazową dziedzictwa ruralistycznego. W opinii autorów może to być przykład dobrej praktyki i zaczątek nowej polityki gminy dotyczącej krajobrazu przedpola miasta.

During the development of municipal planning documents of Lodz, the need for protecting the preserved and clear rural systems has been noted, which are now on the city territory. In the first place, research was carried out on the basis of the query and analysis of archival cartographic materials, comparative analysis of archival and contemporary maps, including the use of modern digital tools and field visits. The results of the research have shown a rich picture of the relics of rural settlements within the borders of the „Big Lodz”, but also huge conservation-planning overlooking concerning the protection of these elements. The currently being developed planning study has been complemented with the conservation and landscape protection of rural heritage. In the authors' opinion, this may be an example of good practice and the beginning of a new municipal policy including the foreground landscape of the city.

Krajobraz miasta, otaczająca nas przestrzeń, jest tłem i sceną naszego codziennego życia. Zauważamy go, postrzegamy w sposób mniej lub bardziej uświadomiony. Im jest bardziej wyrazisty i charakterystyczny, tym bardziej go zauważamy i tym silniejsze emocje są z nim związane. Próbą zaś wyrażenia tych emocji stają się namalowane obrazy miasta, opisy, opowieści a nawet książki. Obrazy te wyrażają naszą zbiorową tożsamość i identyfikację, których nośnikiem jest m.in. otaczający nas krajobraz.

The landscape of the city, the space surrounding us is the background and the scene of our daily lives. We can see it and perceive it more or less consciously or: it can be seen and perceived by us more or less consciously. The more expressive and distinctive it is the more attention we pay to it and it is accompanied by stronger emotions. Painted images of the city, written stories, descriptions and manuals are an attempt to express these emotions. There is a need to define principles of protection and the use of the landscape, as well as its further development expressed in more prosaic texts of legislation and strategic documents rather than in poetic ones. It is a difficult task and great challenge because how to determine in normative acts, measure in numbers and fit in definitions the legacy of many years which reflects the activity of many generations. This article tackles this particular matter – an attempt to define the landscape of the city of Lodz in planning documents, in particular with regard to the currently being developed The study of the conditions and development approaches of Lodz urban planning.
