Temporomandibular disorders affect from 5 to 12 percent of the population, occurring almost twice as often in women than in men. The painful form of temporomandibular disorders is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders causing pain. The chronic form is associated with changes in activity of the masticatory muscles and can lead to sleep problems, reduction of emotional state and worsening of quality of life. Methods: 66 women were included in the study group. The study was composed of a clinical evaluation of temporomandibular disorders and assessment of the masticatory muscle activities using surface electromyography. The anterior part of the temporalis muscle and the superficial part of the masseter muscle were evaluated during teeth clenching on cotton rolls. The symmetric activity index was calculated from the results of electromyographic activity. Based on the activity and symmetric activity index values, subjects were qualified to the risk group of temporomandibular disorders. Results: Twenty people (30.3 percent) qualified for the temporomandibular disorders risk group. In the temporomandibular disorders risk group, the mean symmetric activity index value of the anterior part of the temporal muscle was 72.6 percent and the mean electromyographic activity was 143.94 microvolts. In the masseter muscle, the mean symmetric activity index value was 67.7 percent and the mean electromyographic activity was 155.33 microvolts. Conclusions: Temporomandibular disorders may develop in 30.3 percent of examined women. The research should be continued to determine the temporomandibular disorders risk group, which may enable for the appropriate prevention of the development of dysfunctions in the stomatognathic system.

Content available remote New egzoluminal circular surgical stapler
EN
The study presents the design, prototype version and preliminary results of in vivo testing of the egzoluminal circular surgical stapler for “end-to-end” anastomosis of bowels after the resection, where staples are put outside the intestinal lumen, and walls of the intestinal tube directly contact the intestinal mucous membrane. The adopted idea of an “end-to-end” intestinal anastomosis as well as a strong need for a device that would be re-usable have determined its specific design. The device is characterised by a kinematic mode of operation, different from the operating mode of commonly used staplers, and hence by a specific combination of the individual components. The in vivo tests, successfully conducted on animals, have proved that this method of anastomosis as well as the device used for its practical performance are fully applicable in clinical practice, as best shown by patent application No. P 386369.

Content available remote Application of measures of weak noncompactness to a nonlocal Darboux problem
EN
In this paper we study the existence of pseudosolutions of a nonlocal hyperbolic Darboux problem for the equation [...] with nonlocal boundary conditions u(x,0) + h1(x,u) = g1(x),u(0,y) + h2(y,u)=g2(y), on the bounded region. The functions considered have values in a Banach space and are weakly-weakly sequentially continuous, and the relevant integrals are Pettis integrals.

Content available remote The nonlocal Darboux problem on the unbounded region in Banach spaces
EN
In this paper we study existence theorems of solutions for the hyperbolic Darboux problem of the form [..] with nonlocal boundary conditions u(x, 0) +h1(u) = g1(x),u(0,y) +h2(u)= g2(y), on the unbounded region. The functions defining nonlocal conditions satisfy the Lipschitz condition with respect to a measure of noncompactness.

Content available remote On some solutions of nonlocal Cauchy problems
EN
The aim of the paper is to give a theorem about the existence of solutions of a semilinear nonlocal Cauchy problem for ordinary differential equations in Banach spaces. Since all assumptions are expressed in terms of the weak topology, we obtain the existence of pseudo-integral-solutions instead of integral, Caratheodory or classical ones considered in previous papers.

Content available remote Biomechanical evaluation of two cervical spine stabilization systems
EN
In our paper, we wanted to compare biomechanical effectiveness of the Romadier-Bombart wire stabilization with the Martin hook and rod stabilization. We used 8 human spine specimens and we measured linear and angular displacements under loading, using an Instron testing machine. By applying force in three different positions we simulated extension, flexion, and lateral bending of the specimens. The results of our experiment show that both methods give sufficient and comparable stabilization. We suggest that in clinical practice, because of the technical difficulty of the Romadier-Bombart method, the Martin system should be preferred as the safer.
