A skeleton is a frequently-used feature to represent the general form of an object. The importance of this region-based shape feature is growing in medical image processing, too. This paper summarizes the major skeletonization approaches, the 3D parallel thinning methodologies and some emerging medical applications. An application to calculate the cross-sectional profiles of blood vessels is also presented.

Registration is a recently emerged task in mwdical image processing used to match two independently acquired images. To register images, the geometrical relationship between them is to ge determined. Matching all the geometric data vaible for a patient provides better diagnostic capability, better understanding of data and improves surgical and therapy planning and evalution. Registration of images taken from different modalities (i.e., multimadalty registration) is regarded as rather difficult problem. This paper desctibes a method for solving 2D/2D and 3D/3D registration using interactively defined point landmarks. We have implemented this robust and effective method. The SIR (Simple Image Registration) software system runs of IBM PC-s under Windowns operating system.
