Even at the design stage of products, care must be taken to minimize the consumption of resources and energy. This applies analogously to the use of materials presenting a hazard to environment or health. The legal provisions in the fields protection of health, environment and labour shall here be considered as being the minimum requirements in the respective states. At the Rio conference 1992 on environment and development it became however obvious that there is a global increasing conscionsness concerning the limits of the ecological systems. Hence it results that ecological aspects are to be taken into account as early as possible during the development of the products and the planning of the operational processes. At the same time, the increasing globalization of the markets has led to the urgent need for an international coordination of these instruments. In the hight of these facts, standardization too will be of great importance to the efforts towards a global, endurable, environmentally acceptable development.

Zmniejszenie zużycia zasobów i energii powinno być uwzględniane również na etapie projektowania produktów. Stosuje się to również do użycia materiałów stanowiących zagrożenie dla środowiska i zdrowia. Środki prawne w zakresie ochrony zdrowia, środowiska i warunków pracy powinny być stosowane w każdym kraju jako niezbędne minimum. Jednakże, na konferencji ochrony środowiska i rozwoju, Rio 1992, stało się oczywiste, że wzrasta świadomość ich granic systemu ekologicznego. Wynika stąd, że aspekty ekologiczne powinny być brane pod uwagę najwcześniej jak to możliwe przy wdrażaniu produktów i planowaniu procesów eksploatacyjnych. Jednocześnie po stępująca globalizacja rynków doprowadziła do pilnej potrzeby międzynarodowej koordynacji tych instrumentów. W świetle tych faktów również standaryzacja będzie bardzo ważna dla globalnego, trwałego i przyjaznego dla środowiska rozwoju.
