Strength classes of structural timber – method comparison. Timber as structural material is predetermined for its use in building industry. Its specificity is a need to be strength graded. Timber quality is expressed in strength classes determined by various methods (destructive, non – destructive). Strength classes of spruce timber were determined by diverse methods. Destructive bending test according with STN EN 408 (C408) and 3 non – destructive methods (flat wise bending - CCB, vibration - CMTG, a visual -CVIZ) were applied. Non – destructive methods were compared to the most objective method C408. Strength of correlation between methods (C408 and CCB, CMTG and Cviz) was assessed by statistical characteristics. The most significant correlation was determined for C408 and CCB. In the highest strength class C30, the most reliable method is CCB and the least reliable is Cviz. In grading process, the CMTG method is the most overestimating, the Cviz overestimates less and the CCB method is the least overestimating. The CCB grading method is the most important from the point of view of reliable strength class determination.
