A study was made of water-related properties of Pinus pinaster wood impregnated with paraffin or modified by heat treatment or furfurylation. Treated woods were submerged in water for periods ranging from 2 to 1680 hours. Water absorption, swelling, and dimensional stability in the radial and tangential directions – expressed as Anti-Shrinking Efficiency (ASE) – were determined. Water absorption increased with time, reaching approximately 140% after 1680 h for untreated and heat-treated wood, and 60% for paraffinated and furfurylated wood. The rate of swelling differed between the first hours of soaking and after prolonged immersion. The final swelling was approximately 9% and 6% for untreated pine, 8% and 4% for paraffinated pine, 5.5% and 3% for heat-treated pine and 2.5% and 1% for furfurylated pine (in the tangential and radial directions respectively). At the end of the soaking test, furfurylated pine had the best ASE of approximately 80% and 70% in the tangential and radial directions respectively, followed by heat-treated pine with 44% and 34%, and paraffinated wood with 35% and 13%.

Content available remote Regional competitiveness through Triple Helix model. A case study
EN
This research aims to analyse the innovative performance of a Portuguese region (NUT III Beira Interior Sul) throughout the application of the Triple Helix (TH) approach, examining its capacity to describe and explain the innovative dynamics of the low density regions as an engine of its competitiveness. The TH model seems to be a useful analytical tool to approach and organize public policy and actors' strategy oriented to shape and nurture emerging and fragile innovation systems, namely to identify and characterize regional actors and networks, its performance and links with other institutions , as well as policy implications to embed the regional competitiveness within government-academia-industry partnerships.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza innowacyjnych osiągnięć portugalskiego regionu Beira Interior Sul (NUT III) poprzez zastosowanie podejścia opartego na modelu potrójnej heliksy i wyjaśnienie, w jaki sposób innowacyjna dynamika rzadko zaludnionego regionu staje się siłą napędową powodującą rozwój jego konkurencyjności. Model potrójnej heliksy wydaje się użytecznym narzędziem analitycznym pomagającym zorganizować politykę publiczną oraz strategie poszczególnych aktorów zorientowane na kształtowanie i wspieranie pojawiających się kruchych jeszcze systemów innowacyjnych, a mianowicie do zidentyfikowania i określenia charakteru regionalnych aktorów oraz sieci, ich osiągnięć i rezultatów działań, powiązań z innymi instytucjami oraz implikacji opracowywanych i wdrażanych polityk w celu wpisania kwestii konkurencyjności regionu w ramy partnerstwa rząd - instytucje naukowe i badawcze - przedsiębiorstwa.

Urban noises are emitted simultaneously by a wide variety of sources, such as, transportation and activities encountered in large cities. Many studies show that traffic noise followed by noise produced by neighbours are the main disturbing sources. Considering that both traffic and neighbour noise upset people inside their homes, it is possible to conclude that these homes do not display good performance of one of their purposes, which is the one of providing acoustic comfort. This fact is critical in Brazilian homes, as opposed to countries such as Germany and the USA, since these countries have specific rules for acoustic properties of materials used in civil construction, and Brazil does not. The goal of the present study is to show the acoustic performance of materials routinely used in Brazilian civil construction. Measurement procedures both in situ and in the laboratory are presented to determine acoustic performance of the materials, such as: insulation coefficient for air propagation. The results have shown that the acoustic performance of Brazilian constructions, are under international standard.
