Eemian and Vistulian pollen records from the Łomża region (NE Poland)

In the Łomża region, northeastern Poland, many new lacustrine and peat deposits have been found. Pollen analysis of borehole material shows that they accumulated mostly during the Eemian Interglacial. Parts of these sites were active in the Vistulian, probably in its early phases. The sites analysed usually represent small lakes or peat-bogs sediment with accumulating in different time intervals of the Eemian. Only exceptionally they are represented by deep-water facies with a decrease in water level not before the hornbeam zone, as seen at many Eemian sites in Poland. Especially interesting is the occurrence in the pollen spectra of a number of exotic taxa such as Viburnum lantana, Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, Falcaria vulgaris, Lycopodium lucidulum t. noted previously in the Eemian Interglacial mainly in the south and in the southeastern Poland, where milder climatic conditions prevailed. The analysed interglacial spectra also show signs of plant—animal interaction. Such signs have been observed in Holocene and Vistulian strata, although in other pollen taxa. Pollen affected by these processes may come to resemble other species and so be misidentified.

W profilu otworu badawczego w Niksowiźnie na Równinie Kurpiowskiej, stwierdzono plejstoceńskie utwory piaszczyste o wyjątkowo dużej miąższości 229,0 m. Na podstawie analizy wybranych cech teksturalnych osadów piaszczystych i w oparciu o materiały geofizyczne (grawimetria) można sądzić, że większość piaszczystych utworów z otworu Niksowizna (ok. 175 m.) stanowi wypełnienie głębokiej kopalnej rynny, utworzonej u schyłku zlodowaceń południowopolskich. Wyżej występują rzeczne osady, w których ziarna kwarcu mają ślady obróbki eolicznej. Były one akumulowane w okresie poprzedzającym zlodowacenia środkowopolskie, odry lub warty. Górna część profilu obejmuje piaski sandru kurpiowskiego pochodzące ze schyłku ostatniego zlodowacenia przeobrażone w warunkach peryglacjalnych i zwydmione na powierzchni.

In the profile of borehole Niksowizna on the Kurpiowska Plain, Pleistocene sand deposits of unusual overall thickness reaching 229 m were found. Based on the selected textural features of sand deposits and on geophysical (gravimetric) data), the conclusion can be drawn that the majority of sand deposits of Niksowizna (ca 175 m) constitute the filler of deep fossil gully formed during the late South-Polish Glaciations. Above this series, alluvial deposits containing quartz grains with traces of eolian abrasion occur. They were deposited during the period preceding Middle-Polish Glaciations: Odra or Warta. The upper part of this profile encompasses sands of the Kurpiowski outwash that formed during the late Last Glaciation, then was transformed in periglacial conditions and turned into dunes on surface.

Stanowisko osadów biogenicznych, datowanych paleobotanicznie na interglacjal eemskijest usytuowane w obniżeniu wytopiskowym otoczonym kemami, obok małego reliktowego jeziorka. Osady te przykryte są tylko cienką warstwą piasków deluwialnych. Obecność osadów eemskich bez przykrycia morenowego w okolicach Kolna jest dowodem, że lądolód ostatniego zlodowacenia nie objął tego obszaru. Geologiczna i geomorfologiczna sytuacja stanowiska w Rakowie Nowym potwierdza dotychczasowe poglądy o położeniu Wysoczyzny Kolneńskiej poza zasiągiem zlodowacenia wisły.

The described site ofbiogenic deposits, palaeobotanically ascribed to the Eemian Interglacial, is located in a kettle hole surrounded by kames, near a small relic lake. These deposits are covered by a thin layer ofdeluvial sands only. The presence near Kolno of the Eemian Interglacial sediments without a till cover indicates, that ice sheet of the Vistulian Glaciation was not reached this area. Geological and geomorphological situation of the site acknowledges hitherto opinions on location of the Kolno Plateau beyond a limit of the Vistulian Glaciation.
